A "Bar" is what exactly?
 

I keep hearing different responses.

I hear that it is when the beat plays through once.

Imagine the beat playing for "Eminem - Kill You"

He says

"When I was just a little baby boy, my momma use to tell me these crazy things"

Then the beat repeats as he says

"She used to tell me my daddy was an evil man, she used to tell me he hated me"

Would that be two bars right there? Since the beat went through twice?

*OR* Would this be one bar . . .

"When I was just a little baby boy, my momma use to tell me these crazy things
She used to tell me my daddy was an evil man, she used to tell me he hated me"

Because when I hear rappers say they are spitting a "Hot 16" as in 16 bars. I always notice they're verse has the beat play through 16 times. Which would mean the example I gave above would be two bars.

Can someone tell me which is correct, if either are.

That's how I've always counted my bars, and they always seemed ok to me.

and anyone with a brain would know that that eminem line was a full bar, you jus gotta know, its natural

A BAR IS ONE LINE!!

A "bar" (aka a Measure) is 4 beat hits. A rapper sets up his rhymescheme over those 4 beat hits, then finisnhes the rhyme scheme on the second 4 beat hits, called a "bar couplet".


TEXTERS will tell you a bar is two sentences. Anyone who knows what 16 bars are knows that a bar is one line.

what's there to explain? A bar is 4 beat hits no matter what youre tempo. even if you're doing sticcatto.
