Did Biggie re-define what makes an ill emcee?

I'm listening to his song "Suicidal Thoughts" and I have to say it's one of his illest songs.

He uses an extremely "simple" rhyme scheme:

When I die, fuck it, I wanna go to hell
Cuz Imma piece of shit, it ain't hard to fuckin tell

^^If someone dropped that on RV or another rap board, I think the reply would be, "Lyrics weren't all that good and the rhyming was simple." Yet, when Biggie flows it, it takes on a life of its own. It's amazing.

If you haven't heard "Suicidal Thoughts", DL IT NOW.

kinda tha same wif Eazy. n werd @ Law's quote in yo sig -_- lmao, werd

Ysdat 03-30-06 05:18 PM

that track is solid, I think what make it effective is the fact that its lyrics coming from a deceased legend.

Having released,him saying..
When I die, fuck it, I wanna go to hell
Cuz Imma piece of shit, it ain't hard to fuckin tell

After he died, would not have been anywere near effective if that came out while he was alive. The fact that he's dead, makes it like , Woah! Dukes dead, and were hearing him say he wants go to hell.
feel?

Nope. Biggie didn't redefine jack shit. You hear his emotion in his lyrics cuz he mastered the instrument known as his voice.

That's all.

Tru dat...HIs delivery carried him a looong way...That's not to say he didn't have dope metas and lyrics. but, yea, I agree there...I believe Puff said the same thing about Big's voice...His delivery of his lyrics were intoxicating.

I mean...wow

Then, Puff messed this track up, IMO, putting it on DUETS to that Marley joint...It just wasn't the same to me...THis song gave me chills...That song was eehhhh

Dabatos 03-30-06 05:21 PM

lol ^.. yea but Q.. lyrics arnt all bout complex rhymes, its bout the meaning u put into it.. i think thats wut u mean? lol yea.. lot of people in RV would consider it whack.. like my latest song the lyrics are sorta simple, but lines ha alot of emotion, n realness that makes the listener forget bout the need of good vocab.. cuz they can feel wut im sayin u know?? but yea.. biggie's good.. he's jst waaaaaaaaaay over rated...

Pun's delivery borders on monotonous, like Papoose's. After a while, it gets tiresome.

How do you figure that?

a k w o r d Z 03-30-06 10:54 PM

did BIG redifine what makes an ill emcee? no way. dont get me wrong, BIGs one of my favorite rappers, he was definately nice. but having the ability to spit simple type shit and make it sound nice isn't anything new. people have been doing that since the begining. just say what you gotta say, and have it rhyme at the same time.look at basically all the old old school rappers...like, from 79-85...tell me how complex their verses were...then EPMD, Tribe,2Pac old Ice Cube...Public Enemy....Slick Rick.you get my point, none of them had the most complex verses, it's more their delivery and flow. his delivery and flow is more what made him a great, it's the same thing with alot of greats. he was original... had his own style... and could spit... that doesnt mean you're redefining anything. he's a great... he didnt redifine what an ill emcee is...

∆ P E X X 03-30-06 11:12 PM

Honestly, it's because of a vocal technique that he used called sympathetic tone. That's all.

Ask Tupac and 'Dear Mama' about it.

Magic5 03-30-06 11:33 PM

LMFAO @ saying Rakim is overrated. Are you fucking kidding me?

LaTiNKiTTeN 03-31-06 12:19 PM

..so let me get this straight...biggie is a "wack mc" ....n let me guess,YOU'RE an ill mc right?
GOT CHA
