What hip hop music got to do with racism?

From day one Rap music had a bad image that was loaded with stereotypes of Black males wearing fat gold chains, using foul lyrics and ready to commit violence. Rap music had gone through many battles ranging from the East-West Coast saga to the commercial vs. underground drama and that it's next big battle will be along the lines of race. Some rap music today stereotype’s whites and blacks, it would seem that the Blacks are seeking revenge for the wrongdoing done to their ancestors. But also white supremacy still exists in rap music by who is controlling the industry.

Who Controls the industry!

Another aspect of racism in the music industry is seen by those who control it. Whites have held the authority over this industry from its beginning, and even though we see Blacks and Latinos emerging successfully in their music, it must be remembered that the White man has the most say about music in the public. According to the Rap coalition website, “most black music, is under the corporate control of whites and purchased mostly by white youths.” Record companies and media distribution system that publicizes rap music and gets it to the buyer's hands are still overwhelmingly owned and controlled by whites. Consider also that the largest audience for rap music today is white

Having said that, you would be ignorant to not think there are major cultural differences existing that hold us back from this universal method of thinking. But the lines are consistantly becomming more and more blurred as we continue through time.

As for white people having control over rap music.........Well.. Its a major white trait to conquor and dominate in the political and business arena... Thats just the way our culture is... Its because our past has been built upon a great sense of central common decency and working towards a greater cause for power and success...

We shoudl cherish that,relise that and use it to bridge other racial gaps.

White people control the industry because they can't get into it as a rapper. The racism follows them as well, I know it follows me. People always expect me to be some 'yo yo yo' rapper and just spit nonsense. Ish is mad annoying.

White people decided to take business route where they would actually make a lot of money. Because when you are a rapper, you don't make that much money. Most rappers just sign with a major label, get reconition, then make their own label once their contract is up.

Racism goes both ways, not just for blacks, hispanics, whites, or any other race.

There are tons of black people who have the money to take their place.....they just choose not to.

Put it this way. What was done to rock-n-roll might be done to rap. The difference is, rap's very nature stems from a culture far removed from the white majority--i.e., the 'hood'. Therefore, I don't expect to see a take over in rap like was done in rock-n-roll. The stereotypes are then encouraged and perpetuated because it sells. I told you. People are drawn to two things: beauty and wrecks. Beauty doesn't reflect the gritty "ghetto" life image. So, that leaves only one alternative, a wreck.

Ok...enough with the idealism...Now, let's come back down to earth. Bro, in America, up to 40 years ago, blacks couldn't even VOTE in some areas of the country without fear of being lynched and strung up a tree. So, all this "we are the world" crap is moot. The facts are these:

1. White own most shit
2. Blacks/minorities created most of the music whites now "own"
3. Whites, in America, have often used their position of power to enslave and/or beat the black man down
4. Black people can, and will, own more shit in the future. But, that's going to take time.


Remember, less than 100 years ago, blacks were still being hung from trees. We're making progress.

I CHOSE to attend a 97% white college because I know there are many ignorant views out there. So, in one sense, I did it to prove to myself that I could compete with white folk in their own arena. There is this misperception that blacks are less intelligent than whites because, as a culture, we score lower on the SAT and other standardized tests.

Well, it's a proven fact that black men have to work 2-3 times as hard as whites to prove that we're JUST as good in the same positions. Why do you think blacks excel in so many arenas when we do put our minds to it? Rock n roll and Hip hop are not accidents. When you put your foot on someone's neck long enough, they'll muster all the strength they can to break from that bondage and rise above it.

You need to come to America and study the history of racism. You need to talk to 70-80 year old blacks who lived during a time where they couldn't even DRINK from the same water fountain as whites.
