DO YOU PUNCH IN ALOT? JUS WONDERING .......I KNOW I NEVER PUNCH IN

Past Tense 05-10-07 06:02 PM

nope its either get the verse down or don't do it at all. Because you can't necessarily punch-in preforming it live

Tha .Q 05-10-07 06:03 PM

I think in 4 years of rapping, after about 200 songs, I've punched in twice...

This is exactly why I never punch in

iamthatdude87 05-10-07 06:04 PM

Thats how i see it too....i be hearing these underground artist that ppl say are soo dope but all you hear is punch ins im like wtf? lol

Tha .Q 05-10-07 06:18 PM

^^Yea...which is why I get mad when people don't realize I flow stuff in one take...but it sounds like I punched in

Im like "If only u knew how many takes I had to do to get this right"

THERE ARE some verses I literally rap 50 times before I get it right.

Murdah was one of them.

∆ P E X X 05-10-07 07:14 PM

yup, i punch in, on average probably about 2-4 times per verse.

why? because you end up with a more polished and professional sounding track. and it saves studio time. why re-record 16 bars when i only need to adress 2 words?

i could sit here and list a thousand reasons why you should punch in, and yes, i punch in.

betcha you couldn't tell ;)

TeamOne 05-10-07 07:23 PM

i punch in maybe twice in a verse.... maybe..... usually try to get it in one take

Young Kidd (LM) 05-10-07 07:27 PM

I punch in maybe 2 to 3 times a verse...

BigTony.Self 05-10-07 07:34 PM

puch ins are cool if yopur working on studiop quality song u can always learn the song live it sounds diff enuff as is no one gonna notice whether opr not you do or dont .....

Jay Rose 05-10-07 08:02 PM

i punch in when necessary like when it sounds better to hold out a word...i usually dont do it cuz im not that good at matching the quality...yep...

TonyTone 05-10-07 08:20 PM

i punch in either after every 4 bars or 8 bars, why? because it sounds better...more professional. just because you punch in doesnt mean your not able to perform it live also

Sir Smash'Alot 05-10-07 08:22 PM

when you perform live you can get away with more screw ups.

not saying you should be off but it already sounds different, not like they gonna notice unless your screwing up repeatedly..

Tha .Q 05-10-07 09:01 PM

Punchin in is for piussies!!!!!!!

B. Magik 05-10-07 10:05 PM

Nah, I never punch in.

∆ P E X X 05-11-07 08:39 AM

yeah i used to be hard-core gung ho like that too on that ol "oh shit im gonna get it in one take!! if i can't do it in one take im not a real rapper!!"

then i realized, ok, i got it in one take, but some shit sounds rushed, you can hear where i don't annunciate one part properly because im getting ready to go into the next part, and the shit all around does not sound as polished as the shit in my class, so whats the point?

there's no trophies for doin shit in one take lol. there's no award for laying your 16 in one piece. there ARE however trophies and awards for making a hot track though, wouldn't you agree?

Mad Dog 05-11-07 09:27 AM

we should replace the word "amen" with "Apexx"

∆ P E X X 05-11-07 10:40 AM

WORD EXACTLY lol i hear all these people bragging about doing it in one take, big deal. lol I get soo picky that sometimes I record one verse over cuz I dragged a word I shouldn't have, sometimes do like 15 takes on a verse, till I get it down perfectly.

dawg, that's why artists are smart and have a hype man or someone to rap their dubs. and when they say your dubs YOU can take a breather during that. That's how most rappers do it. Em with proof, G-Unit always did it, NaS etc etc

Young Kidd (LM) 05-11-07 12:28 PM

Spul and pexx speak the truth.

I m with spul on being picky to. sometimes i do verses in 1 or 2 takes. sometimes i do verses in 10 to 15 takes if im really picky that day.

so its all good. it still comes out how i want it in the end (at least as good as i can get it with a shitty mic but hey) lol

WhoAmI 05-11-07 03:12 PM

sometimes i punch in sometimes i don't

but when im dealin with other people...i know it seems nuts and hypocritical but i could tear out my hair when they need to punch in like 4 or 5 times in a 32 bars....that shit = more work for mixing :cussing:

Sir Smash'Alot 05-11-07 06:29 PM

I can never get the punch ins to sound right
like you can tell something went on from bar to another..

so i get mad and just delete shit and re do it all in one take mad and fuck it all up

not in my experience. i find mixing punched in tracks a hell of a lot easier due to a better quality take. any vocal inconsistencies in one punchin to the next is easily fixed with gates and compression.

that's all in your vocal skills. i know of one dude who's like... robotically consistent with his punchins, he could do 100 takes and every one of them would sound the same. now that's vocal skill.

.Judicial. 05-11-07 06:54 PM

man i am all day with my verses, cuz i literally dont want to stop untill i am satisfied, and you know how hard it is to satisfy yourself with your own work...i do my verses atleast 20 times easy...i even re-do my dubs and adlibs sometimes about 15-20 times...lets not even get to the hook lol, thats ridiculous...but umm i only punch in when i think it is needed, i have nothing against it..i usually design my verses in sections and punch in-in each section...it sounds good, works for me...i guess its different for everyone

Logic The Goonie 05-11-07 06:56 PM

I'm an emcee, not a track maker.

So no, I don't really ever punch in.

Ysdat 05-11-07 07:16 PM

I make tracks as a emcee, so yes Im'a punch when I want to.

Tha .Q 05-11-07 07:26 PM

Ysdat 05-11-07 07:59 PM

TonyTone 05-12-07 12:17 AM

Lol, but yea......punch ins are the shit

Jay 3rd 05-12-07 12:23 AM

^ lol @ Q... naw i punch in depending on the track and flow.. sometimes i can get it nice in one take sometimes i only have to do 1 punch in...
just like spul said thats why u have a hype man.. i agree with apexx 100% cuz in the end u sellin Cds not takes..
u can hear the difference a lot cuz u hear some lines where they almost outta breath or u hear em breathin in like a muh fucka every line they spit u hear a gasp..

and for 3rd eye.. when u punchin in try it different ways...
how i do it is i i do the lines i need and when i stop and go to the next track i repeat the last 3 words i said and continue off that.. then u highlight the repeated part and leave a slight vocal of it so u dont get pause and then it sounds clean..

yeh but some people i record like their whole tone of voice changes when they stop and start and then they can't get it back to how it was before...it just gets tedious when i'm dealin wid people like that

See the thing is I can make a better track with no punch-ins than most of you fuckers can punching in the whole damn track, so really, I don't give a fuck what you think.
