Black leaders are outraged over a new board game called "Ghettopoly" that has "playas" acting like pimps and game cards reading, "You got yo whole neighborhood addicted to crack. Collect $50."
Black clergymen say the game, the brainchild of a Pennsylvania man, should be banned, and have called for a boycott of Urban Outfitters unless the company stops selling Ghettopoly in its chain of clothing stores.
Urban Outfitters has not publicly commented on the issue, and did not return a call seeking comment on Wednesday.
"If we are silent on this issue there is more of this type to come," the Rev. Robert P. Shine Sr., president of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia & Vicinity, said at a sidewalk rally Wednesday in front Urban Outfitters' corporate headquarters in Philadelphia.
Shine displayed the game board, with properties including Westside Liquor, Harlem, The Bronx, and Long Beach City, and squares labeled Smitty's XXX Peep Show, Weinstein's Gold and Platinum, and Tyron's Gun Shop.
Players draw "Hustle" and "Ghetto Stash" cards with directions like, "You're a little short on loot, so you decided to stick up a bank. Collect $75," and "Steal $$$ if you pass Let$ Roll."
The creator of Ghettopoly, David Chang, did not immediately answer e-mails or phone calls seeking comment about the game.
On his Web site, Chang is unapologetic, and promises that more games — Hoodopoly, Hiphopopoly, Thugopoly and Redneckopoly — are coming soon.
"It draws on stereotypes not as a means to degrade, but as a medium to bring together in laughter," Chang maintains, adding, "If we can't laugh at ourselves ... we'll continue to live in blame and bitterness."
But the Ghettopoly board depicts figures labeled "Malcum X" and "Martin Luthor King Jr." — intentionally misspelled — noted Rev. Glenn Wilson, pastor of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church.
"This is beyond making fun, to use the caricature of Dr. King in this regard," Wilson said. "There's no way that game could be taken in any way other than that this man had racist intent in marketing it."
The Philadelphia black clergy and Men United for a Better Philadelphia were just the latest to protest the game. In Chicago, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church, called for a boycott of Urban Outfitters. In Florida, the St. Petersburg and Hillsborough County chapters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (news - web sites) urged the company to stop carrying the game.
"I was outraged. We called Outfitters, we wrote them a letter, we held a press conference, but we've had no response," Pfleger said Wednesday.

I think there's nothing wrong with it. There have been a lot of games created that are directed towards things much worse than this. The only difference is, they're normally interactive. Sometimes free on internet websites....

Especially since this guy isn't just focusin on "ghetto folk". According to his up and coming games....he's branching them out quite nicely to hit all the comedic targets of our eras.

There is nothing funny about the ghetto. There is some pretty serious stuff going on in the ghetto. On the front they got a stereotypical black gangster-like dude on the front, holdin a tech and a forty ounce. Like those are the black men in the ghetto, it's like a racial joke... and your suprised.

I think the creators of the game are just seein what will sell and at the moment hip-hop culture is selling. However, the game seems very stereotypical and kinda racist....................................

I agree, it is meant to be hr=armless simple fun, but with stereotypes that would be in the game anyway to make it fun, issues of racism and stereotypes of black people will always arise.............in my view its harmless, but other people could be offended

I can understand Hip-hopoly, can be soomethin fun, if they do it right. You know Have 2Pac board walk, and Biggie park place. I can understand how Black Leaders might be offended , but then again , Most organized groups are always offended by something. Personally I clicked on the site and thought it was preety funny . Take a movie like "Friday" and this movie is filled with racial stereo types depicting the hood. However , this is one of the alltime black film classics , we love it , aren't offended , but Im sure some black leaders are ..........who cares .... there will always be someone yelling about the race card , but in the entertainment industry , racism is entertainment. In the real world and the streets it can be cruel , but in the entertainment industry its part of the big picture.

It's funny to contrast our differences in our cultures...What about the famous mountain joke, how the white guys would go climb the mountain JUST cause it's there and the black guys wouldn't. Thats funny and tasteful, cause it has a little bit of truth in it. It's not saying anything negative to either side.
Friday was funny because it was authentic, many of US could relate to it. There wasn't any stereo types runnin wild in there, plus it came from us. We can laugh about our problems together but when someone from the outside laughs at you , you get offended.
If a black person made this game it would be authentic, cause it would focus on the real funny stuff from the hood, like friday. But if you don't live in the hood, how would you know what was funny? I know a lady with three kids that got addicted to crack, would've never know she was until, she overdosed in a crack house, nobody knew where she was, they found her in the bushes somewhere 2 weeks later, 32 3 kids crack<-tragedy NOT FUNNY.
Things like crack guns & alcohol are not positive aspects in any kind of way. Especially when they are associated with your people.

I think releasin the game is a bad idea. Yeah a lot of people will use it for harmless fun but others will actually take it serious and try to get their hood addicted to crack. And they'll be makin alot more than $50. The hip-hoponopoly is the best idea so far with pac walkin the board or somethin. One about the ghetto could cause some serious problems
