I don't particularly like or dislike Jay. If I hear a song from him that I like I play it, but I don't have any of his albums. So, I'm not biased for or against him. The people in here defending Jay are being dickriders. If you honestly think that its ok for Jay to constantly use other people's lines and concepts, then you're being stupid. Its not about whether he can or cannot make his own lines. Of course he can, anybody with sense knows that Jay's got skills. But there is a thin line between showing respect and using something someone else did to make your own shit better. Its no different than all these cats droppin dead rapper's names when they didn't even know them. Its just a ploy, and its disgusting.
First of all, that homage shit is a cop out. If you use a line every now and then that's homage. If every song has at least one line taken from someone else, then its just biting. He's trying to use paying homage as free access to use Biggie's lyrics and that's not cool. On top of that, Jay Z isn't just any rapper. He's supposedly the best right now. If you the best, you supposed to be an innovator, not a biter. So what a lot of other people do it? How many other people label themselves the greatest living rapper? If you gonna be that you got to play the part, and using and recycling other people's stuff is not playing the part.
Also, that Jay-Z does not always give credit for the lines he uses and he doesn't always use well known lines so thats BS. I don't know how many times I've heard people giving him credit for something that wasn't his to begin with. I'm sure Jay-Z knows that a lot of people aren't going to pick out everyone of those lines and know they aren't his. For goodness sake, he bit the hell out of Bun B, and Bun B isn't even that big or well known on the grand scale of things.
"Now once upon a time, not too long ago
A nigga like myself had to strongarm a hoe
This is not a hoe in the sense of havin a pussy
But a pussy havin no God damn sense, tryin to push me"
Bun B had that on Ridin Dirty, Jay-Z bit it on 99 Problems. That's not a popular line, and no where did Jay-Z credit Bun B. That's not even the only time that's happened. He took a Pimp C line to, and I can't remember what song it was. Basically, Jay-Z hears something, likes it, and uses it. It wouldn't be so bad if people weren't always blowing Jay-Z up as the god of rap. And none of it would be worth mentioning except for the fact that all the Jay-Z dickriders in here are jumping up and down trying to defend him knowing damn well if someone else used other people's lines this much they be attacking them everyday.
People on this board make too many concessions for their favorite artists. Its like a dickriding zoo here. You got the Nas exhibit, the Jay exhibit, Pac, Biggie, a whole damn safari. Ya'll need to chill on that for real.
