Nah, the Olympics generates billions for the country that hosts it, from tourism alone, then there's the things you mentioned, hotels, food, wages, etc. Every one of those things are taxable, and who do you think collects the taxes?
As far as the U.S. not getting the bid - of course they didn't. Who the hell tohught they would have? It was infeasable form the get-go. NY wanted to BUILD a stadium to accomidate the Olympics. It takes years to build a stadium and no one thoguht they'd have anything ready in time, wher eas London already has a stadium built, so why wouldn't they get it?? That makes as much sense as giving your money to a bank that hasn't opened yet, vs. the guys who are already in business.
