whoever sounds good on a beat is what defines a rapper but a rapper with meaning is an emcee

Have a message in your rhymes, BUT you still need swag... Immortal Technique is a good lyricist...but until he can present hisself better, he's no "great rapper"

I think freestyling is just one small aspect of being a rapper...

When you get into the debate of who's the greatest of all time, I think it hinges upon what core fundamentals people value the most--i.e., freestyling, writing, rapping.

Yeh, there are a few things that make a good emcee. But to me a dope rapper doesnt need to be able to freestyle or battle.
Emcee I support to the death is Royce 59. He cant battle, but I dont sit here and say he is a weak emcee cause of it. Same goes for a few other dope emcees, they are strong in one point, and weaker or even wack at another.

I think this thread should be, whats makes a rapper NOT a rapper. Then we can filter out the reasons why too many emcees getting radio play are wack as fuck and have a huge following.

I say that writing, and actual rapping ability defines a rapper...

What makes a rapper a rapper??....if you have to ask that question than ur not one....Hip Hop is what makes a rapper a rapper as long as that shit is in ur heart that is all that matters....but you can be Hip Hop without being a rapper...rapping is just one end of the spectrum...and as for Hip Hop its not just rapping its living that shit...its not changing when ur around a black dude...its living that shit no matter what...those 5 up there are COMPLETE BULLSHIT if a anyone actually believe's that they diserve to be kicked in the fuckin teeth....

Alright.......were talking about being a 'rapper'.........not being a muso...

Freestyling is definatly one of the most important parts believe me... if you cant freestyle well............your gonna fuck up eventually... Cause cats will put you on the spot, and your reputation as a performer will be at stake and if you dont deliver then you can basically kiss your street cred goodbye..

Way I see it....... Songs and freestyling are both of equal importance as part of being a rapper.. because a rapper is two things, an artist and an MC... And if you have trouble thinking fast on the spot then put you up infront of a crowd and youll look stupid......

I think Royce got in D12's ass with that Malcolm X shit.
I think he CAN battle

Ysdat 12-05-07 12:25 PM

^theres a diffrent between a written diss and a 'on the spot battle'

He did shit on D12. He did shit on Mista FAB. With a written disses. Not freestyle battles.

Well eistein.
If you can diss someone and you can freestyle then you can battle.
Its just mixing the two together

Nynth Degree 12-05-07 07:27 PM

What makes a rapper a rapper? Rapping, and that's the only thing. There are other aspects required for being a good rapper, but being good at rapping is really discouraged against in mainstream society.
