...Here's my opinion, 'cuz Kon asked for it:
Hip hop is about expression of self, about getting a point across in an interesting manner, but at the same time staying true. It's an art form that has been kept aive by nowadays only a handfull of true emcees. Take Blackstar (Talib Kweli and Mos Def) for example. They released their album back in 1998, and what did they do with the profits? They used it to move Brooklyn's last remaining black bookstore to a place where it could continue bringing in business. They put their earnings back into their upbringings, and that is a perfect example of staying true.
.
.
But do I take hip hop seriously?
Absolutely. I got my first taste of hip hop when I was like 7 (with the exception of MC Hammer, of course). It was Bone's "Creepin' on ah come up" that really introduced me to this type of music, and i was hooked since. When I got older I started developing aspirations to try rapping myself. Yeah, I was wack at age 12, but I kept at it and elevated my skill. When I got to high school pretty much all I would do was sit in the back of class and write in my notebooks. That increased soph. year when I started getting instrumentals. I became totally emersed in hip hop, freestyling and battling people almost everyday at lunchtime. Now I'm at RV. Yeah, I wasn't that great at first, but that's because I had no experience battling total strangers, so I had no material for personals. But I kept at it, and even though I believe I still need elevation, look where I am now.
.
Personally I don't think I can get famous with rap, but I truthfully don't want to. I'm currently working on an album (2 1/2 years in the making), and if I ever get signed I wanna stay underground. You have a lot more freedom as to what types of songs you want to make when you're undergroung. Besides, I could give a shit less about Pushing a Porsche 911, or buying out stores when I go to the mall.
.
So that's my opinion, if you don't wanna read all that then fine, I only posted it for those who are interested in what I have to say. And if you think I'm underskilled even after I've said I need some more elevation, then you shouldn't judge until you've heard/seen my tracks that aren't about people I don't know...
