Talent!!

Ok, Does it take more talent to write Poetry or to write a Rap verse?? Personally, I think it takes more to write poetry..but i'm a poet..so of course, What do you think?

Termz 12-23-03 06:19 PM

well it depends on a persons abilities and how deep into each you'd like to go. doooope punches take time for some people, for some not. same with poetry content.

SpritepixieL 12-23-03 06:21 PM

I just think anyone could write a rap verse, not everyone can write poetry.

bouncedoggydog 12-23-03 06:24 PM

Well that depends on the read. We all know it's harder to rap then read. I do both and I find poetry flows off the tounge rather easy, as opposed to some of my more complex rap verses. So if it's just a written issue, I guess you can argue both sides, but when it boils down to delevery, Rap is much harder to spit.

EDIT: I think anyone could write a rap verse (<--as qouted by yourself) but to be a truly ammazing rap, it's going to incorperate many technical aspects taken from poetry. So they complement each other to a degree...

I would say they are both equally difficult... poetry flows out easier, less restriction on form, rhyming is not necessary, but you have to be able to Move the reader in a profound way....

Rap - it's easy to make something rhyme or say something witty, but to write it in a way that allows for excellent delivery and impact takes talent... plus you have to be able to turn that written song into something that sounds good...(unless you are talking about text only, which in my opinion doesn't compare to good poetry no matter how well a verse is written).

but the bottom line is, RAP IS POETRY

Baron Mynd 12-23-03 06:31 PM

Personally, their both aspects of writing. If you look into some pieces ive written, they take me days to perfect before i post them here. Every line i run over, check the wording, adjust the pattern etc until im pretty sure its how i want it to sound or come across. Add to that the imagery, emotion, multi's, internals, wordplay, rhyming couplets, similies, alliteration, syllable count. There's really a lot involved, its not like i just sit there and the first word that rhymes i jot down, you know?

self 12-23-03 06:34 PM

Rap is poetry minus the beat.

The topic which the "poem/rap" is written upon does not change anything.

But anyways, definitions are overrated.

Hence: RAP stands for Rhythm And Poetry ..

SpritepixieL 12-23-03 06:49 PM

I just think poetry is more insightful and deep rather than murderous and "gangsta" like rap is..that's why I think it takes more talent to write poetry. Packed full of emotion..it's what I like. No changing my mind :).

$pitacular 12-23-03 06:53 PM

then you have a very limited selection of rap that you have listened to.... some albums, like Outkasts first (Southernplayalisticadillacmusic) does have some gansta to it, but embodies a much bigger movement and the emotions associated with the subject - it's a very angry album yet the ideas and statements are intelligently spoken and convey alot more than just G's and Hoes shit... struggle of the blacks in the South, ect. or listen to common or Eminem and tell me they don't have emotion that strikes you as well written...

broaden ya mind PixieL

C-Section 12-23-03 06:57 PM

well maybe if your only talking about text.

but if yo mean audio to audio then no

all rap isnt like that. listen to someone like mos def, his rhymes are kind of poetic,(he does def poetry too) if you want poetic rap download bottle dreams by eydea, or get some sage francis, or aesop rock(i hat him but people say he is poetic) if you think rap is all about the stupid shit you hear on the radio your missing the truth about what its about.

bouncedoggydog 12-23-03 07:10 PM

Another victim of commercial hip hop. If you let what airs on radio or mtv, dictate to you what rap is, then you have already lost, my friend. So many members on so many boards all speak volumes as to what a disgrace commercial hip hop and rap has become. The industry rapped the game. You need to look for new avenues of music along the lines of rap and hip hop, but not those only played on the air. Like these guy's have mentioned there are so many other artist out there to listen to.

Well this is of the subject a bit, but here on RB, is one of the better peotry forums I've seen in a while. Go check out poetic scriputres, drop some feedback then post some of your work. I am confident you will be amazed at some of the poets in there. I have dropped raps there that were looked at as poetry....

SpritepixieL 12-23-03 08:48 PM

I wrote some poetry in the poetry forum already. Just so yall know, I'm def. not saying Rappers don't have talent!! Tupac was a really good writer.

Jes 12-23-03 08:49 PM

anyone can rap just as anyone can write a poetry... for it to be good, thats another story...

i can write a poem and it make no sense and call it "abstract", rap you have to have a point (even if its stupid, like gangster), but its to each his own...

you can't compare the two...

$pitacular 12-23-03 09:30 PM

and you can put a ring in your lip and call it art... but hey who are we to judge lol

Jes 12-23-03 09:33 PM

^^ it's not art its a piercing... duh

$pitacular 12-23-03 09:34 PM

^^actually it was snide humor... but I was jus fuckin around Jes... you know you hot

Koalatee 12-23-03 09:35 PM

piercings could "figuratively" be considered a lackluster form of art. . duh

Right now, go away.

You will never write anything I would possibly even want to acknowledge.

Feeble Minded 12-23-03 09:44 PM

If we're talking about the words:

Poetry is a line of words, followed by another line of words, that can or can't rhyme. Rap is a line of words, followed by another line of words, that is supposed to rhyme. (although, some of rb's dumbasses such as TRUE*D haven't figured this out yet).

pretty simple. the emotion can be in either. rap can have hatred, poetry can too although not many do. rap can be about love, so can poetry. well this is how i look at it.

personally, its harder to write rap, punches, multies, and good vocab all together to make a good rap. when ya battle u have an oponent, when writing poetry its just lettin out emotions. poetry comes more natural for me so to me it seems that it would take more skill to write a good verse, than writing a good stanza.

SpritepixieL 12-23-03 11:26 PM

Bruklor, you never read anything I wrote..and get the stick out of your ass, it was just a question!!

D-Dizzle 12-23-03 11:35 PM

Its rappers who write they rhymes like they are poetry like the Common's, Mos Def's and the Nas's, it's poets who can moonlight as emcee's too like Sage Francis, Yusef Malik and Saul Williams the only thing diffrent is that poery ain't really written to a beat. But they go hand in hand tough, its really the same thing to me. They have Emcees on Def Poetry Jam and all they do is just spit accapellas of they raps....

MuhThugga 12-23-03 11:37 PM

Hip-Hop is poetry. Understand that concept and you will no longer be boggled by your life's mysteries.

my body is not covered in piecings, its just my lip...

i didn't pierce my lip for some deep-rooted spirtual or artistic meaning...

it was actually superficial ("hey lets get something pierced")

"figuratively" yes it can be considered art... but i'm not speaking figuratively...

spit i know you were being humorous (and it worked)... i thought i was being funny too... guess not...

yea so i'm not abstract

LMAO at Bruk's and Muhthugga's comments... good shit

Listen cunt, you are the one that said "I just think poetry is more insightful and deep rather than murderous and "gangsta" like rap is..that's why I think it takes more talent to write poetry. Packed full of emotion..it's what I like. No changing my mind:)" - So you take the few IQ points you have, and I don't use the word "few" loosely, and find you ass back whatever reason that gave you the idea to come onto a rap forum and smack it with the stick from my ass.

Run on sentence's are cool. Anyways, for a "poetic" person, you have quite the herbish name, a name one would usually find on some idiot Gangsta Rapper Wanna Be on RB.

Thus concludes our class on why you shouldn't speak. Thank you.

To me Rap and Poetry can be the same...

When I write my lyrics they have a good flow...but it's a poetical substance....So to me rap and poetry is eqaul in away because it can be one into two....some heads might not know what im talking about but uhhh yeah....

Laters....

Ferris 12-25-03 12:27 AM

its all in the content and how you feel about the situation. there is really no 1 answer cause everyone is different
peace

Chrit 12-25-03 12:29 AM

My topicals are borderline poetry anymore

t-west 12-25-03 12:32 AM

well poetry is harder to write but u must remember that rap is not only about ur words, but your delivery too. I find this question invalid because your question does not focus on all of the elements of rap, so poetry is the obvious answer.
