The reason you miss them is because they are connectors, not nouns, adjectives or verbs, and so the brain doesn't pay as much attention to them. Also, you recognize the F's at beginnings of words because they're more prominent. And third, when you hear it in your head, "of" sounds like "uv"....no F sound.
