whats wrong w/ my whip???

aight man, i got a green ford cliTAURUS... its like 5 years old mayb 6. it was my moms. it has been thru alot of miles n shyt... but usualy when i drive it, it's straight, sumtimes it'll smoke a lil bit but o well lol... nothin big... but lately its been actin weird as hell.. i'll go to drive it, and when i come to a stop and go to accelerate again, it wont kick in right away, like ull hear tha engine rev n it'll all kick in like a second after it should... n kinda peel out a lil bit... sum ppl tell me it could b as simple as an oil change... which it hasnt had in like a year n a half at least lol... n sum people say it could go as deep as a new transmission or belt... anybody have an idea? n how much would it cost to fix?

Know-Gimix 09-05-05 01:38 PM

as rv's resident mechanic-- trust me when I say-- everyone you've talked to is retarted, and its DEFINATELY, your tranny- the engine revving and what you describe as delayed engagement are signs of transmission damage... Ford Taurus transmissions are notorious for blowing out after 30K miles, so consider yourself lucky cuz Im sure it got more than that- you can try having the fluid changed, which cost like 100 bucks, which might clean the electronic eye and restore regular performance, or you might need more work, but its definately the tranny, if it was engine related, the engine wouldn't run, or you'd have different problems.

^o word, so just ask for the transmission fluid to be changed? cuz i know everything just passed inspection like 2 or 3 months ago, i dunno if they check for that... but what happens if i have to get sum more work done on tha transmission, is it worth it? or should i just invest in a new whip?

Know-Gimix 09-05-05 01:56 PM

inspection doesn't check tranny, its only lights, brakes, exhaust type shit.... You might just be low on tranny fluid, the fluid might be black (should be bright red), or your tranny could just be fried... I just know the symptom is definately transmission related, possibly a torque converter- brand new transmissions are expensive, tranny work can be expensive, but thats why they have estimates, get it checked out before o.k'ing any work, and see if its worth it to you in the long run.

if u wanna check the fluid yourself, just start the car, let it warm up, and while its running and in park, pop the hood, look for the red handled dipstick, pull that sucker out and see how it reads... then you can fill as needed through the dipstick hole.

^aight man, i needa cig break n e ways, ima go out n try that rite now... ill let u know how it goes

the omen 09-05-05 02:24 PM

ok, just peeped everything out... i couldnt tell which one was the transmission fluid, so i just checked everyting i found, every fluid was a darkish color, so maybe thats the case, but even wen i ran it for just a second, it was smoking. is that caused by the fluid? is it damaging to run it till i get it checked out? lemme know

Know-Gimix 09-05-05 02:30 PM

smoking where?- from the exhaust? or from under the hood?-- depends where its coming from.... an easy way to tell which one is tranny fluid is smell the two(one dipstick is oil, one is tranny fluid, green bottle is engine coolant, blue is washer fluid, and the little box w/ the circle cap dipstick is power steering)... the dipstink that stinks, is tranny fluid...

the omen 09-05-05 02:50 PM

its smokin from under tha hood, like from the transmission.. n there wasnt a dipstick n e where else, besides the oil... that i could see, so i just unscrewed a bunch of caps that didnt say (powersteering fluid, washer fluid, engine fluid) by the transmission n looked at the color of the liquid inside, it seemed like 1/3rd full, n real dark.

Know-Gimix 09-05-05 02:56 PM

yeah you have 2 dipsticks, the tranny one is harder to find- smoking from underneath the hood means you have leaks, and whatever is leaking is being cooked off from the heat, nothing to be worried about- if u cant find the dispstick, bring it in, have em check it out, might just be low.

Oil chnage AHAHHA!! I woulda posted bot RV's OTHER resident mechnaic beat me to it, lol. At most it's the torque converter, which is the equivilant to a clutch in na auti trans.

the omen 09-06-05 02:32 PM

^so whats that mean? is it expensive? lol i fucked up my car even more yesterday tho, i was all exited about cleanin it out n puttin up stickers, so i had tha car on, but i didnt turn tha engine on. so i ended up runnin tha battery down... now today it wont start lol... now all i can do is sit in listen to tha radio for like 10 mins b4 it fadesssss... damn ima tard.. o well all i gotta do for that is jump start it w/ spark plus rite? n then dont b a tard next time n ill b straight? correct me if im wrong

C.March 09-06-05 03:45 PM

nah man if the car is like jumpy when u come to a stop at times... like it moves when ur on the breaks n shit..... and then when you stop and go... it doesnt shift then your problem is the tranny itself not the tranny fluid.... check the fluid just incase but its happened to me as well.... i had my car shifting weird as fuck... and sometimes it would get stuck in 5th and not lower when breaking etc... so i had to get a new tranny n shit..... but realistically its something with the tranny....

Check your powersteering hoses.... i had that problem as well... there was a powersteering leak and the fluid was leaking onto the exhaust manifold causing smoke and a shitty ass smell.... soo yeah it was about 200 canadian for the hose and labour n shit..... that fixed the smoke under my hood.....

On a taurus, the trans jobs are usually like 600-1000 bucks around here. As for that dead battery, yeah, not spark plugs, lol, jumpercables. and you should be ready to go.

If you hit the gas, and the engine sounds but it still takes a second to accelerate, your cars timing may be off... My brother had the same problem and just replaced the timing belt... But his car still sucks.
