This site is a hip hop site, but it's also a chance for heads to elevate. So I am going to start helping cats elevate. First thing, real hip hop, if you don't know the difference this is going to be your first lesson. Go get KRS ONE's album Kris Styles. Listen to it if you don't feel it you probably will never get what real hip hop is about. That's todays homework, listen to that album and report back. :thumbup:

That's what makes me lose motivation to rap. Most of what people are looking for now isn't hip hop at all. They want beats and to have chants of guns and drugs. So its like ok, I'll be real and not make money or be fake and be rich as fuck. Arg :mad:

People only ask for what they know, so that's my point. If more people knew about the real hip hop artists that have been doing this shit for years, maybe they would realize they have a choice.

Hip hop is the culture of Breakdancing, Graffiti, Turntables & Rapping..
Buying KRS-1's album isnt gonna make someone suddenly know what hip hop is and I think if your telling people stuff like that, it might not be your area of expertise, to the extent where you would do a good job teaching people about hip hop.

Rap is music...
No matter what style you use or prefer, your ultimatly making music.. If you look at rap from an industry perspective, a lot of cats are just clueless as to what their trying to do and rely on short careers where they have the shit marketed out of them by people who could give a fuck less about any of their goals..

I dont look at rap as the underground being real hip hop and the commercial scene being bad rap.. When I look at rap, I see the underground, where cats make songs mainly for the enjoyment of hip hop heads and employ more complex techniques to get their message accross simply because hip hop heads will understand more complex techniques in rap. Underground rappers dont bring in loads of cash though because their target audiences are always going to be smaller.

Commercial rap on the other hand, is for a much larger target audience... Commercial rappers have to appeal to not only those who are die hard rap fans, but also people who listen to more than just rap, and ultimatly people who dont even listen to rap.

Your talking like hip hop is some kind of vast enigma that few people understand.. In reality it is a straight forward word for the culture of breakdancing, Djing, rapping & graffiti.. But no matter what you prefer to call your rap, like I said before... Its always just gonna be music..

And music is always going to be subjective... One mans trash is another mans treasure. Personally, I am looking to break into the commercial scene.. That doesent make me any less of an artist, because I still rhyme better than a lot of underground artists that are getting recognition these days.. And my message will always be the same no matter how much I bring in for my music.. It just means I'll be rapping in a larger scene that most underground heads couldnt break into if they tried..

Dont try and label hip hop as being one type of rap (ie the type you respect the most).. I apreciate any music made by people I respect as an artist.. That doesent mean only the artists I respect are making real hip hop... It just means thats my preferance..

rap music is self expression in a poetic form. You can accapella rap, and its still rap music.

Why is it that every man and his dog tries to sound deep by throwing around words like poetry when talking about rap.. When I sit down to write my songs, the last thing on my mind is "Ooh I'm gonna be real poetical in this verse"..

Its such an underground myth that rapping is like poetry.. Poetry uses words to describe and provoke feelings and emotions.. Rap lyrics use more real straight up language to get a point accross.. Thats not a personal preference, thats what THE MAJORITY of people enjoy hearing in rap songs. Underground junky net heads sometimes like it the other way around, but wow @ how small that target audience actually is..

Fact is..
If you rapped some poetry to a beat, it is extremily rare that it would sound any good as a song.. Just like if you spoke some rap lyrics as poetry, it is extremily rare it would work at all or appeal to a poetry audience..
