Oldest Memory of Hip-Hop

yeah, so what is your oldest memory of a hip-hop song or group when it actually came out... sometimes i wish i was older so i was actually around when Wu Tang was droppin all their hot shit and Nas and Jay were first startin and shit... and so i got to thinkin and realized i remember alot of shit being 18 that you 15 and 16 year olds wouldnt have even experienced, so i figured this would be a pretty cool thread to hear people's memories...

i would have to say my earliest memory of a hip-hop song droppin would have to be some old school Dre and Snoop shit, then Eminem and the Bling Bling Era with Cash Money at kinda the same time...

so do some of you younger cats not even remember like the start of Cash Money comin on the scene, somethin that changed the face of hip-hop...?

Blay'all 11-21-05 03:11 PM

yeah, like comin up in the household i did and everything i realize i didnt get introduced to hip-hop until i was old enough to hear shit on my own, so i missed out on alot of the really early shit...

Blay'all 11-21-05 03:24 PM

well, see i would have been what like 9 at the time... i think i remember it on the news and shit, but that was before i was really enough into hip-hop for it to mean anything to me :(

its the fact that they are old enough to remember stuff from before eminem or nas, but dont, and the fact they remember the commercial shit first, i was born into whats basically a hip hop culture... everybody listened to it round my ends along with reggae, soul n shit like that.... but also i know alot of these kids dont listen to anything(or barely anything) from before the time they founded hip hop..... ive had kids i wont mention names, that ive talked to on here, and they dont even have a clue who kool herc is, n they are more or less the same age as me.

exactly, but everybody WASNT "born" into that, and thats what im saying, theres nothing wrong with them finding hip-hop after that... its not like "oop, you're 6 years old, you cant start listening to hip-hop now"

No sir...

I was born and raised a rocker.

It still resides in my system...I occasionally rock out to Metallica, and if the occasion is right, perhaps a little classical with a puff of marijuana, and country with about a flat of Kokanee's finest brewed alcomahol.

Word...the bands I listened to growing up:

Aerosmith
Nirvana
Metallica
Bon Jovi
Guns N' Roses
Matchbox 20
Our Lady Peace

Oh and sooo many others.

I never really first listened to anything even close to hip-hop until I listened to Limp Bizket...but thats not really hip-hop-imotomous.

Eminem was the first rapper I ever heard...on a Dre track. I thought he was a scronny little black guy till I saw a picture of him lmfao.

I got Slim Shady in like 2000 maybe, heard a bit of rap before tat but i was like 11/12 and it wasnt that big over here as far as i knew.

The First MEmory Though Is Walking into a music store in York somewhere when i was like 12 or 13, and hearing whats the difference, I stood next to the speaker like the whole song, went and asked the guy which album it was from and bought it. I listened to Dre near religiously for like 6 months, then listened to more and more.

Now Im Dope.
