Because he served his purpose as a photographer - he captured as much as he could on film, and had a highly prestigious award to show for it. After his purpose was over, he felt he would set things right with those he was unable to help in the past. It's natural for people to be haunted by past experiences they're not too proud of, and he just found a solution to it.

suicide isn't a solution to anything...if he fullfilled his duty as a photographer, he could've went back to help, suicide is not helping anyone

Imagine how many things die because a photographer cannot interfer with nature's course. He simply brought upon himself what his career had brought upon that little boy...death.
