Majors in high school
What do you all think about this? I read where in Florida there's a bill being passed around that would require high school students to declare a major like in college.
I think it's a good idea because you could tailor your education to what interests you most. Holla 1 |
That's would have made me like goin to school.
|
kids are young in high skewl man.. they could think bout it in college.. that's wut its for.. if they do that in high skewl, it doesnt give kids a chance to exerience what they like if they are forced to choose right away.. lets say they choose medical field.. than later by senior year they wanna do something else like with computers n stuff.. its jst stupid to to majors in high skewl..

I already picked my major, sports medicine.

Sounds like most college students... In college, you normally don't have to declare a major until your sophomore year. And, liberal arts colleges like the one I went to allow you to take a variety of classes before you even have to declare a major. So, I think this idea would work if they fashion it after liberal arts colleges--i.e., allow the students to experience a variety of courses. Also, I don't think age is an issue. People generally do what you give them the lee-way to do. So, if a student knows he'll be expected to declare a major, then, he'll enter highschool with that mindset. iono...wut do you think? |

OLD, ive had a major in high school since i was a freshman |

New to me...I hadn't heard of it until this Florida issue. I guess Chicago isn't as important as Florida. P.S. Do you go to a public school? |
naw niggas jus sleep on chicago, its not a big deal, while apparently florida thinks its the 9th wonder of the world n shyt, and yea i go 2 a public school
|
uh.. yeah it's a good idea.. cuz right now it seems there is no point
|

True dat. i get that whole "why am i even here?" mindset when im at school. It seems like just a waste of time right now. |

That's why I want a job like you do :( |
Uhh, what? Lol.

i wanna git pay3d so i dont hav 2 git edjucashin asshole |
All this crappy job has showed me is how getting an education IS important, otherwise youll be breaking your back all your life and getting paid shit.

or you could look at it like.. while all your punkass friends are in school, you're getting money and shit. yeah, beat that |

Yeah, and getting home at 2 in the morning after working long ass shifts and only getting ONE 30 minute break.

Hey, at least you have some pocket change when most of your peers probably don't. 1 |
Yes, thats the only benefit.
|
Quote:
Yea, that's a major benefit though. When you're treating yourself to a movie and dinner out, they're at home watching "BET PRESENTS" and eating cup-o-noodles. |
Quote:
None of my white friends watch BET. |
Quote:
ok...MTV PRESENTS 1 |
Sometimes it's best to chill at home though. I work so I can make rent this summer when I get my own place. But half the shit I do is free. lol
|
no...i dont like it...this would limit future career opportunities and high school is too early to decide what your occupation will be
|
You could always switch your major, its not set in stone until you actually do it, and even when people do it, its not set in stone.. people change their majors in college all the time.
Its just giving you something you can see to work for. |
I've changed it twice and I just got in college. lol Well not really change, just tweak.
|
...highschool kids need some general all around knowledge before choosing a major....that is a retarded ass idea..
god man, everytime i refresh the page the Q has made a new thread............. |
Quote:
nah, it wouldnt trust me, im in college... and you still have to take all the same basic classes before you can start focusing on what you want to do... and most people in college change their mind 3-4 times in their 4 years there, so just think about how much that would happen in high school... it would probably just become irrelevant b/c no colleges would ever care about it and the idea would eventually die out... |
Quote:
Actually, if they make it like a liberal arts college, the students would still get a well-balanced education. And, cot dang, everytime I refresh the page LK responds to another Q thread............... |
shit son,i'm on mat leave, whats ur excuse for bein on allllll the time lol
|
In Florida?... never heard bout it and I'm down here.
|
this would prolly be a lot like how magnet schools are set up...schools for performing arts, science, etc...wish they had more schools like those in Houston...lots of people leave school because they feel like it's pointless, I think if we got to study what we were actually interested in, we'd stay in school...it'd be more fun and less mundane, you wouldn't feel like it's all "busy work" which, to me, is pretty much what your Junior and Senior year of high school is |
But the US already has such a limited offer as far as classes are concerned, limited in the amount of classes you take I mean (on high school level). You have what...7 classes in HS? Whereas in Europe, most countries provide 12 or more classes in HS giving students a good basic education. The danger of having to declare a major in HS is that there are always going to be students that don't have a clue what they wish to study until graduation or such. The good thing is that you can have an advantage for higher education. Over here, we have "project" classes where you can pick your class and have it for one semester. Like last semester, I took Spanish, this semester I'm taking philosophy. This allows students to pick classes that are close to their interests but a major...hmmm it may be a bit too far already.

don't I keep tryina tell ya'll that the American schooling system is pretty much just as retarded as our President? LMAO |
