FX Original "Black & White"
 

So, on FX...there is a new show called Black and White.

Basically these people get made up..and switch races, and at the end of the day..talk about there different experiences.

Now, before this show....I had a decent and reasonable idea, that racism isn't as much of an issue, as people make it. IT IS an issue, especially in different parts of america, and the world as well....But I do think and always have thought it's not as bad as a lot of people say. I've seen racisim first hand, especially in the south...so don't come in here with a closed fuckin mind, and start bitchin me out when you didn't even read everything.

but here is the scoop. Minorities claim to experience racism in every day life, even if it's subtle. They also make fun of white folks, for speaking properly and clearly, walking fast, wearing suits, and shit like that. They also make fun of a black person who does those things, but it's considered acting "white". Now, to be completely honest...thats not acting white, white people don't act like that. Those actions and mannerisms are sacrafices we force ourselves to make, in order to be employed.
Do you honestly think we go home and act like that?
There is a huge issue with minorities.....blacks and mexicans especially, and them being un-employed. The problem is, most un-employed mexicans don't speak english very well. And let's talk about blacks, By the way, this is a general statement but,
i want to know how many less white people would have jobs, if we all went in, wore doo rags, chains, baggy ass clothes, talked in a mixture of southern drawl and ebonics, and everything. This is a business world, or a business country i should say. Just about every business works with people, the best way to sell anything, is to make people feel comfortable. Look at all the elements you, as african americans...have going against you. The way you talk, your mannerisms, RAP....people hear rap, and all they hear 95% of the time is african americans angry about something, they see guys talking about killing eachother, that dress and have the same mannerisms you do on the street. How is that supposed to make anyone feel comfortable? People want someone that they don't think is going to shoot them in the face...not very many people are threatened by the african american who acts and dresses.."white".....now, you can call it racism that the average person stereotypes the average black man because you guys look like the same self proclaimed thugs that they have on t.v....but it's not just because you are black, if it's because of you being black at all. If white people talked and dressed the same way you did(a lot do, and from what i've seen...struggle horribly to find work) im willing to bet the white to minority unemployment ratio would be a lot closer to being even....

this show, black and white...sort of proves the things i'm saying...the white man who is turned to a black man, doesn't experience anything different, or so he says. He also claims the black man who is turned white, is looking for examples of racism. Because when he was black, when bad things would happen, it was subtle racism...when he was white..bad things still happened, but good things happened to him just like when he was black..but he blamed it on being white. I personally see this all the time...minorities tend to assume that something is meant differently than it is intended to be meant. This obviously isn't always the case, and a lot of times..it isn't the case at all..because racism is a live and well, i just don't think people are realistic about it. Bad shit happens to me all the time, i get treated like shit, people ignore me, and everyone else...people are assholes to everyone, but whites arn't really use to being treated differently for there skin color, where as blacks have a history of it, and i feel like unless everyone treats them as good as they possibly can, there going to blame everything on racism...when it's just someone being an asshole, regardless of anything exterior....

By the way, i don't want you to tell me that what i'm saying basically means that minorities arn't hired or treated the same because of cultural differences. The culture you have, and just about everyone in america has, is culture that is adopted. The way african americans speak, isn't because your african. It's because you were un-educated to english language, and learned to speak the way the southerners did. It's something you've embraced from the beginning of the slave days. White people all have some kind of culture, a lot of the times thats put out of site and out of mind..to hold a job.

Maybe thats why saul williams says our..."culture, is that of a schizophrenic vulture"

Well all I'm going to say, because my post could be 5 times longer then yours against it is that the white people on that show are totally ignorant. They do shit to try and please the black people and try to show that they're being embraced when in fact they should be trying to show that they are accepted. Well, the adults are ignorant, the girl is pretty ill.

Yeah, I think theres been like 3 or 4...i've seen 2 of them. I would def agree with you that the adults are ignorant, however...there ignorance doesn't alleviate the idea that some things that are shown in that show, prove my idea that some black people..or minorities...misconstrue people being assholes as an act of racism. I think a big reason, on the western part of america, that people are seen as racist. Because everyone is so afraid of saying the wrong thing, or doing the wrong thing, or whatever. I don't like the idea that if i get in a fight with a black person, because we just don't like eachother...could be considered a hate crime. And that sort of shit happens all the time, i hear black people say all the time...."it's cause i'm black right?" it actually happened when i first moved to eugene, i asked this kid if he played basketball, cause i wanted someone to go to the gym with...and he immediately took that as i said it cause he was black....when in reality...i said it because he was in my room, listening to music, talkin to me, and i wanted to know if he played so I could go the gym with someone. He coulda been fuckin green, and as long as i knew he wasn't about to die...i woulda asked him the same thing...another time i was trying to explain something to a different dude, and i said..."yeah, remember that one black dude?" and that got taken as racist...."oh why you gotta point him out because he was black?".....seriously? maybe it's because thats how it's easy to remember him, and get others to remember him..this is oregon, and as sad as it may be, black people stick out..because they are rare.just like white people with
rare and easily noticable features.... if he had one leg, blonde hair, blue eyes, and acne...i would have said...hey..remember that dude with one leg?....and those are just two of many examples...


once again..racism does exist...i just don't think it's as popular as some people make it out to be...

Maybe they want to show someone they are accepted, but they don't know how to do that without intentionally going out of there way to prove they embrace them, without offending them. I think one of the problems that keep the idea of racism alive...is a lot of people tend to be over bearing when it comes to proving a point, and so it's easy to fuckin tell when there trying to prove something...and not being racist, is something that is probably a big deal to them....it actually annoys the shit out of me...maybe it's in a whites nature to be paranoid that nobody believes them, or maybe thats how everyone is..i don't really know.
That's a form of ignorance i suppose, but i don't see how anyone could be upset with that

i went there (mississippi) my freshman year, and i've never seen so many bigots. Thats how I know racism is definately alive...i honestly felt nervous just not feeling the same way as they did. I've never been so quiet, and so ashamed of my silence..in my entire life

Around here it's on at 10...on wednsdays i think..i try and make it a point to watch it, but i had finals this last week, and studied all week before that.

Why is this so taboo, i really don't get it. I want hard cold, evidence that what I'm saying is innacurate, I have a shit load of evidence that it is accurate, thats why i left it open for discussion....i want people to come in here who disagree, or can elaborate on something i've said, and can explain exactly why...otherwise it's pointless

I dunno, I've been down this road so many times. And I HATE race related threads cause people always make extremly bold remarks and I get mad. And everytime I DO give them evidense of how racism is a problem, then they think its some made up story. They ask for it, but when they get it they deny it. Racism does exit, very much so..and i've explained that, i have a great idea of it...and the problems it causes..Growng up in georgia, having family in mississippi , i know all about it. I've never once said "so".

what I'm saying is, i don't agree with every wrong thing done to be a minority, to call it a racist act. People are assholes to people, and sometimes it is strictly because of race, or creed..or whatever

Well you can't take some examples of people taking it too far and dismissing the issue completly. I mean you said black people make fun of how white people talk and that its just because you do that to get a job. White people mock black ppl 24/7 on how we talk. And we don't mock people talking normally we usually mock ppl going "dude cowabunga" and I dont even think white people say that anymore. I sware this is the age of white people finally freeing themselves from the slavery on minorities or some shit. Black people dont call shit racist as much as you think. and as far as mocking people. I see it a lot. What makes comedy funny is, the fact that it's true...or completely absurd. And our mannerisms we use to be employed, have often been a punchline for many comedians....and has been accepted among a lot of people. Now, maybe thats an Oregon thing. Because when I did live in atlanta i didn't really think about things the same way as I do now...but in my experience...the black people here, definately accept that acting proffesional is acting white, and is funny. And here, black call things racist all the time. I've been on the other end of it many times. Luckily I'm great at explaining myself, and have been able to explain to most people how the things I say arn't racist, however....once again, maybe it's an oregon thing.
I grew up in atlanta, recognizing racism, and accepting everything that was claimed to be racism, as racism. I moved to oregon, and as my mind expanded and shit was easier to understand, i noticed my views changing on how things really are. However, that could be coincidentally due to the fact that shit is different over here, and that should somehow apply to the rest of america. Either way though, my point is still true. Because regardless if it doesn't apply to the rest of the world, a part is in fact relevant.


and I think if a black activist is called racist...it's a mixture of 80% ignorance...and 20% the means they try and express there activism. Not every activist is enlightened to the idea of reality, and what it means to be black in a white country....They CAN be just as ignorant as anyone else. And like you said, a lot of the black community accepts being considered lower class in the black ghetto....so the few who don't accept it, are either correct, and are doing the right thing for the right reasons. Or they notice there is something wrong, but handle it differently than it should be handled....speaking out, not lying down, and building people up is an example of positive activism...putting people down without trying to enlighten them, or help them understand when obviously they need it, and foccusing mostly on that isn't very positive to anyones race.

I think the problem is, just like mainstream rap..it's simple for a reason. People don't want to think, they just want to accept shit. Which is why it's easier to point the finger at someone, instead of trying to help them see shit the way it should be seen.

I haven't seen the show, but I saw clips from it on Oprah. There was still tension between the two families. I was floored when the white mother said, "I thought black people called each other bitches." ???????? ummm...NO.

Then, the white father was about to go to church in a disheke (however you spell it). lol...ummm...NO.

White people who say ignorant things like the mother aren't racist, they just don't know any better. I went to school in Amish country. They rarely see black people out there. I chose to go to that school to give me a different perspective, being as though I live in a predominantly black area. There were a couple times when some of those white folk came out their mouths with jaw-droppingly dumb statements. But, most of the few blacks I went to school with were magnanimous enough to educate them without making them feel dumb.

I went to school with people who didn't know what extensions were. My friend Kamika had short hair on one day, but then had extensions the next day. So, this white chick was like, "OMG, how did your hair grow so fast?"

LOL...embarrassing...Then, when Kamika explained that she had extensions, the white chick wanted to feel all over her head...

I've intentionally made this thread, with an open mind. So far, no one has told me anytyhing i didn't already know....Or something I didn't already agree with....

Being black, there is no way for you to know, that something that may be considered racist, is misunderstood...or misconstrued...(i never once said, or implied, or believed..this was refferring to everything that you go through, just a part of it)

Being white, there is no way for me, to understand, or know exactly what it is you go through on a day to day basis.
How the fuck ever, being white, there is a very easy way for me to know....shit is misconstrued all the time as being racist, when really it's not.
How do I know? Because it's happened to me, and for you to dismiss that it's happened to me....is just as ignorant as you see me, as thinking I'm dissmissing all the racism you claim to recieve...especially when I'm not claiming racism doesn't exist, i'm not claiming you don't see racism every day....I'm claiming racism isn't as strong, as a lot of people think....that point of view is not a matter of being black, or being white, and to feel that it is...is ignorant in itself...extremely ignorant, and hypocritical....


all I'm saying is, racisim isn't as popular, as a lot of people think....I've proved that, easily...if you disagree, it's holding yourself hostage in a world that doesn't exist like you think it does.
