The jet engine falls through Donnie's roof, and since Frank allows him to live there is a new universe known as the Tangent Universe that is created as a pocket universe; Frank tells him that in twenty eight days the highly unstable pocket universe will be destroyed and become a black hole, which then destroys the Primary Universe. Frank, many say, is a sinister spirit attempting to lead Donnie away and destroy the universe by making good things happen to him --- an outcast speaks up against a local author, he meets a girl. But then it appears Frank shows him that if he continues to live that everyone else would be killed; Frank would die, the real Frank and not the Manipulated Dead Frank that guides Donnie, and his girlfriend would also perish if he happened to continue to live. So, he decided to return the universe back to normal by ripping the jet engine, which then will fall through the wormhole, thus the origins of the engine; Donnie then uses the wormhole to go back in time, gets into his bed, and dies as nature intended, effectively destroying the pocket universe. Donnie has the ability to tear off the plane engine because he is the Living Receiver, the person most closely associated with the object that disrupted the Universe (i.e. the plane engine).

ok, what was the point of that? why would frank allow donnie to live but then in 28 days everybody would die so donnie would have to die so everybody could live. when the engine could have just fell while donnie was in the room. and what the hell was the ending all about? did he go back in time or was this all a dream? while i was watchin it tho i noticed stu stone from jamie kennedy's show was on there.

There are differing theories: one that explains it is that Donnie did die, and he was in a dream-like state so that he could cope with his death before finally meeting God. He could see that life is good and all, but if he had continued to live, then others would suffer and die.

Frank may be considered as an evil figure: he's tempting Donnie with the pleasures of life, but finally it occurs that his girlfriend dies, so he finally decides to go back in time.

The ending, he goes back in time and decides he should die, deciding if he lived too many people would suffer the consequences.

The beauty of the movie is how it's complicated and you can never fully decide on one thing. :thumbup:

What do you not get about it? The teacher tells him about cellar door, which he goes to. Frank does everything because it sets things into motion; Donnie must live so that he could go through everything and eventually send the engine through, killing himself, and thus creating a paradox. Frank is a Manipulated Dead, and Donnie kills the Frank in the Tangent Universe so that Frank can come back as a Manipulated Dead and guide him. If Donnie does not do this, the Tangent Universe will condense into itself into a black hole and most likely wipe out all existence.

You have to read the Philosophy of Time Travel pages on the official site, which is nearly impossible to navigate without assistance.

And the scary thing about it is how Franks costume is so simple that it scares me... plus, I was... (lemme count) like 9 when I saw it for the first time so theres like a thing where if I try to watch it, I get scared by remembering how I couldn't sleep at night when I first saw it.

Donnie is sleepwalking, Frank doesn't exactly make it so he lives, but Frank rather like follows him. :) Plus, Frank had to summon Donnie in the first place so that Donnie could send the engine through the wormhole and create a paradox in the first place.
