Underground Or Commercial

Like, I was just thinking about this...real talk...Where is the money at in Underground? Alot of people on this site said they want to be underground artist, thats all fine and dandy, but commercial rap is where the money is..Real Talk!!
And ya'll start hating rappers, cause they go commercial, I think it's a good business move. You still got lyrical content, but you gotta dumb down just your singles..

"..the music business hate me, cause the industry aint make me
Hustler's and boosters embrace me, in the music i be making
i dumb down for an audience, and double my dollars
they criticize me for it, yet they all yell holla
if skills sold, truth be told, i'd prolly be
Lyrically, Talib Kweli
Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common, sense (I did 5 mill)
I aint been rhyming like common sense
Wen your sense got that much in common, and you been hustling since
Your inception, fuck perception, go with wat makes cents
Since, I know what I'm up against
We as rappers must decide wats most import-ant..."
Jay-Z : Moment Of Clarity

^That's dumb ass real...I'd rather go commercial if anything...Cause, you could still get your money and appeal to the real niggas who listen to real lyrics, and not all that "get crunk/snap ya fingers bullshit"

where they "throw they head back, and freeze like the wind"..hahaha..tha fuckin wind blows you dumbass!!! that shit dont freeze..hahaha

Would you go, commercial, or want to be underground?

It depends how much of my freedom will stay intact if I go commercial. If it'll turn my image into something I don't wanna represent, then I won't represent it. And if I had the opportunity to sign a major deal, then I'd certainly be able to sign to a smaller label, maintain my full creativity, and appeal to the people I'd want to appeal to.

And plus, with the education I'm getting right now, I can get a well-paying, semi-enjoyable career, and do my underground hip hop on the side. So I'll still be making money, but I'll also be doing what I want with my music.

moment of clarity 2nd verse is 1 of my fav jay z verses

but its all dependin on my goals in rap and my location but id be more inclined to stay underground n work towards a distribution deal if the numbers where right

Ok.. not everybody wants to get into hip hop for the money and fame. You have more creative control in an independent deal and release dates and timing are less strict.

M Eazy 11-22-06 03:11 PM

Yea, I understand its not for the money and fame, but later on down the line, you gonna be in this career, where you're not making alot of money, but you enjoy it..when you start thinking about the money you could be making, your no longer going to enjoy it. But i feel what ya'll saying. I dont wanna represent what im not...its a toss up..close one too, but in the end, when it all boils down to something, i think id rather still go commercial. cause you can be the best rapper ever, but if u not on a commercial tip, then your raps are useless..cause they're not getting heard.

In australia, most of the commercial hip hop scene is based around an underground image..

^^^hilltop hoods kill it

Past Tense 11-22-06 06:53 PM

I prefer a mix of both. If i listen to one for toooooo long I get fed up and cant stand it. SO I tend to listen to a mix.

TonyTone 11-22-06 06:55 PM

jay prolly bit half that verse from big =/

Sir Smash'Alot 11-22-06 07:14 PM

Immortal Technique is underground, but independent
He made the same a mainstream artist would make if he went gold
cause mainstream labels dont give you much money
