What makes a rapper a rapper?
I was having this conversation earlier wit someone...
They were saying how freestyling is the most important thing a rapper could do... I say that writing, and actual rapping ability defines a rapper... anyway...which elements make up a rapper? 1. Freestyling 2. Battling 3. Writing 4. Dissing 5. Rapping ?? holla 1 |
whoever said freestyling is the most important aspect of rapping is a jackass
thas like saying "having rims is more important than having a car to put them on" i say the ability to rap is the core aspect of being a rapper |
everyone can 'rap'
I think content has alot to do with being a rapper. Mims jibbs souljah bou and a million other 'rappers' arent emcees, well not hip hop emcees, they are simply that, the rap fans rapper. I dont think you can narrow it down to a specific sound style or type of person. It like asking, what makes a human a human. |
yeh for real
cos personally i think souljah boy should be shot in the face every time i have to hear to him rap ok i was taking Q's question at face value but in terms of being a real emcee i say it's down to rapping and writing combined you've gotta be skilled at both to be considered a good emcee substance and style |

^^And you can answer that question...What makes a human human... I think freestyling is just one small aspect of being a rapper... When you get into the debate of who's the greatest of all time, I think it hinges upon what core fundamentals people value the most--i.e., freestyling, writing, rapping. 1 |
then again i guess thas why the true hip hop heads don't feel any one rapper is the best

^^Precisely...when I say "Biggie is the greatest," what I mean is that he's influenced me the most and he's the emcee I'm most impressed by. That and the fact that he's amazing lol 1 |
I dont think none of those things you listed makes a rapper. I think its the ability to get your point across and what your trying to say across to people. Anybody can rhyme but it takes actual skill to get across a point in a rhyme.

What makes a rapper?
Or what makes a good rapper? Any nigga can rap, but are they good at it? |
Quote:
^^Good point... most of the guys on the radio can rap...ability wise...but, what are they saying is the question. 1 |
I think MUSIC is what you yourself make of it, despite genre.
|
but we're clearly talking about rapping though, now aint the time for no let's all unite type bullshit
|
well from what I see on TV what makes a rapper is nice (not fancy) clothes, a decent, clean face and the ability to flow words in a rhythm. Perhaps a "chain" also.
<_< |
oh I'm sorry, that's what makes a RICH rapper.
Back to the actual subject. Pen + Pad + Will. Nothing else. If you're a fucking mute you can't rap either. point blank done. |
Are there any deaf rappers. That would be pimping. Be like the Bee of rap.
|
i saw a concert for deaf people once...kinda made me chuckle lol
|
Quote:
deaf rappers? what's next? blind rappers??? bwahahaha!!! oh tha thought... werd |
whoever sounds good on a beat is what defines a rapper but a rapper with meaning is an emcee
|
Have a message in your rhymes, BUT you still need swag... Immortal Technique is a good lyricist...but until he can present hisself better, he's no "great rapper"

Yeh, there are a few things that make a good emcee. But to me a dope rapper doesnt need to be able to freestyle or battle. Emcee I support to the death is Royce 59. He cant battle, but I dont sit here and say he is a weak emcee cause of it. Same goes for a few other dope emcees, they are strong in one point, and weaker or even wack at another. I think this thread should be, whats makes a rapper NOT a rapper. Then we can filter out the reasons why too many emcees getting radio play are wack as fuck and have a huge following. |

. . . . What makes a rapper a rapper??....if you have to ask that question than ur not one....Hip Hop is what makes a rapper a rapper as long as that shit is in ur heart that is all that matters....but you can be Hip Hop without being a rapper...rapping is just one end of the spectrum...and as for Hip Hop its not just rapping its living that shit...its not changing when ur around a black dude...its living that shit no matter what...those 5 up there are COMPLETE BULLSHIT if a anyone actually believe's that they diserve to be kicked in the fuckin teeth.... |
Alright.......were talking about being a 'rapper'.........not being a muso...
Freestyling is definatly one of the most important parts believe me... if you cant freestyle well............your gonna fuck up eventually... Cause cats will put you on the spot, and your reputation as a performer will be at stake and if you dont deliver then you can basically kiss your street cred goodbye.. Way I see it....... Songs and freestyling are both of equal importance as part of being a rapper.. because a rapper is two things, an artist and an MC... And if you have trouble thinking fast on the spot then put you up infront of a crowd and youll look stupid...... |
Quote:
Yo what the fuck? Technique is an ill emcee... How does he 'present himself' wrong......? |
Quote:
I think Royce got in D12's ass with that Malcolm X shit. I think he CAN battle |
^theres a diffrent between a written diss and a 'on the spot battle'
He did shit on D12. He did shit on Mista FAB. With a written disses. Not freestyle battles. |
Quote:
^lol @ u...Yea, u have to ask, then u "aint one" as u put it...i'm askin to spark discussion...i already know what makes a rapper dawg...Been studying hip hop and appreciating it for a long time...heard all the greats...I've been rapping for years... So yea...And, I'm not talking about this "hip hop vs rap" thing...Im talking about RAPPING... 1 |
Quote:
Word man...I went to a concert for deaf people...iono...I didn't like it... It was sooo quiet. lol 1 |
Well eistein.
If you can diss someone and you can freestyle then you can battle. Its just mixing the two together |
What makes a rapper a rapper? Rapping, and that's the only thing. There are other aspects required for being a good rapper, but being good at rapping is really discouraged against in mainstream society.
