Is Rap Currently Whack?

i seen this topic at http://www.SOHH.com and i wanted to hear more input on this....

i think that rap is whack now a days...heres a good example...

is it just me or is more then half the songs you hear on the radio nowadays a remix? i mean a good remix once in a while is a treat...but everyone is doin a variation of majic stick and 21 questions....

im also real sick of this new genre of rap i call "love rap"...(horrible title)....and these beef tracks are terrible...just plain awful...

think about the main labels now aday and the product there commin out with...

roccafella - im not feelin the bonny and clyde shit...but i do like freeway and some other new fella tracks...but i also hate damon dash...

shady - at least these guys are original

murda - does anyone even listen to murda anymore?

bad boy - how many i need a girl parts can there possibly be...what are we on 7 now?

cash money, etc. - probably the worst label out right now...how did these guys blow up in the first place

im to lazy to keep listing these...feel free to add...

i just wanna here some other opinions

DarkHisTory 05-27-03 02:01 AM

that sums it up^

its not really that rap is gettin more"whack". Its just after recent things that the hip hop scene is now gettin more popular and is being commercialised more. SO ull c a lot more "junk" but the old roots r still there. The new movement is here to expose the hip-hop culture all be it lackin the deepness of other work.

This could b a good thing for the industry. These new "whack" things r just there mayb to make money and expose the industry. It mayb just a steppin stone to reveal other hip hop talent, its just that the listener has to delve into it more to find the real stuff. Unless ur one of those ppl who want it to remain underground forever and then leave it to die out which is no good. Mayb not totally commercialise it but at least expose it to other ppl who may really like the culture and have an inner natural talent.

Sweet-Mary-Jayne 05-27-03 04:45 AM

Yeah i must admitt hip-hop is a bit wack its more like hip-pop 50 cent and the whole Ruff ryders are mad but its still sorta poppy i dont know whats going on these days

DaviD WoRdplay 05-27-03 10:23 AM

Rap and Hip Hop is what you make of it...

If no emcee appeals to you then it's obvious that you're no fan of Hip Hop... plain and simple

N-Demik 05-27-03 10:25 AM

LoL...

Rap Really Destroyed Itself To Be Honest.... It Used To Be Acceptable In And Before The Mid 90's, Then It Just Fell Into Purgatory.

Nowadays We Are Just Fully Over Blessed And Inundated With Fake Artists And Concepts..

Sad But True

G. Buttersworth 05-27-03 11:19 AM

it's really what the tv, and the radio puts out thats wack.

every track on heavy rotation is grabage*. pick up some mix tapes.. not kay slay or clue... but some shit like green lantern... where you would get quality music for your 10 bucks.

but it's kinda true what n-demik said... shit my playlist conisits of tracks from 86-96. thats the era when rappers got "paid", but not in the mills*.

*garbage.( for you geeks in the audience)
*millions.

Kost 05-27-03 11:32 AM

stfu u fuckin freak. Sum typez of music wernt made to please anyone. True murda inc on the most aprt is wack but peeps like u cant look at anything that aint on the underground. u think your betta than peeps who like mainstream music coz u in2 a bunch of artists a lot of us never heard of. Rap has never bin wack, saying artists shot themselves in the foot in the 90s fool. your style owes a lot more 2 the 90s than it does to the old skool simplistic flow and fun lyrics. Throw away your copy of Funcrusher Plus and have some fun!

Kost 05-27-03 01:56 PM

i just think that right now...80 percent of all new shit commin out is str8 recycled garbage...you can call me a backpacker but ill call you a trash picker

Master Blaster 05-27-03 02:21 PM

Is Rap Currently Whack?

Rap Is Music...Music Comes From The Emcee or Femcee

So Rap Isn't Wack...It's The Particular Artist That's Making It Wack

Rap Is Like A Title That Some People Use...It's Like A Sub-
Category...You Just Can't Judge It By It-Self

So If Rap Is Wack...Then You Mid-As-Well Say Hip-Hop Is Wack
As Well...Diss The Hole Nature Of The Culture

i don't know...whatever

*sorry for the bullshit*

~1~

Kost 05-27-03 02:59 PM

i think people are missunderstandin the question....in 2003....does rap suck? i say compared to 10 years ago hell yea

BloodType:FU 05-27-03 03:06 PM

yes...as far as 2003...rap is horrible...i dont even bother to listen to the Radio nemore...and i havent bought a new cd in months...

infinitiG 05-27-03 03:12 PM

i think you got it all wrong. Rap is only going to go up from here although some of the best labels are struggling (so so, no limit) we will still see them come back stronger than ever. Whats ruining rap is this bullshit put out by Dre and Co thats just eaten up by pop culture (everyones on their jock). Murda Inc is also whack but if they can steal Shyne from Badboy they will reastablish themselves as one of the best labels. Bad Boy is going to explode again with up coming releases of Loon and Black Rob. And cash money is still phat, BIRDMAN

BloodType:FU 05-27-03 03:21 PM

^wtf...Spare Me Ur Wak Commercialism... every label u just mentioned is complete ass cheeks...so so and no limit??lmfao..get ur head out of the toilet...

infinitiG 05-27-03 03:36 PM

Should i Dick ride the labels that arent signed? whats the fucking point, they dont do anything for rap, all im saying is taht with new signings and new deals rap will get out of the gutter and stop making remixes

BloodType:FU 05-27-03 03:42 PM

i never said anything about peeps who arent signed...

..:TeckNeek:.. 05-27-03 05:48 PM

k its not that rap is whack its just in a phaze ya know.....artists wanna make money thats why they try and blow up soooo its all about club shit right now cuz peeps see it as a way ta make large money...like 50 and ja ya know they make whut listeners want.....see in here we all rap soooo we know whut raps totaly about ....most causual listeners don't know shit bout rap they just listen cuz it sounds "COOL" ya know.....soon enough the "REAL" shit will come back and take out all the "CLUB" shit....thats whut the rap scene is on rigght now club bangers and i agree eSs i havent bought a cd in soooooo long cuz the shit out right now is all club...mobb deep dropped a cd and thats about the only true deep commercial shit i've seen this year....sure theres underground but there underground for a reason cuz the listeners arn't feelin that shit right now ya know....thats why us rap artists here think rap is WHACK

Ha ha ha...backpackers aren't destroying anything. I suppose I am, by you all's stand points, a backpacker. Why? Because I don't listen to that garbage gangsta music and that stupid club shit that I swear decreases my IQ whenever I hear it. Just because I listen to someone that is actually poetical with words and can actually make a song that's worth a damn. I am a backpacker because I listen to artists that inspire and try to raise the level in Hip-Hop, explore new areas, and expand upon the culture. That is what you're definition of a backpacker is: anyone that listens to the different.

But I don't care, I like being a backpacker ( by your definition) and I will continue to love my "backpacking" music. Ah but wait, I listen to Nas, Scarface, Tupac, The Roots, dead prez, Public Enemy, and Run DMC. So I suppose if any of you fools listen to that, join the group, you must be a backpacker. Because how can a backpacker possibly listen to something of the mainstream that is of actual quality? IT'S UNHEARD OF!!!!!! I hope one of you has a seizure and burst a blood vessel thinking about this too hard. "He listens to some of my music, but he is a damned backpacker. Does that make me a backpacker? Ow, my head hurts."

I pick my music well. I have listened to both sides of the world and I must say that the undergound is much better. Of course I hated Aesop Rock when I first heard him. Duh, he was different, but now he is my favorite artist. I gave the underground a chance and now I see that it is far superior to the mainstream drivel that you hear on a typical Def Jam album. I own Jay-Z albums, I own DMX albums, I have Ja Rule's Venni Vetti Vecci, and now all of those albums are tucked away and I'm trying to get rid of them. I don't want them at all. They are garbage.

So don't judge me and blame me for "the down-fall of Hip-Hop," because I am the one who is willing to give that new artist, that unheard artist a chance and listen to him and hear what he has to say. I don't pass anything up. I even gave 50 Cent a listen to, and you know what, his ass is trash. If you don't like it, I don't care. My opinion, my reasons.

MuhThugga 05-27-03 06:38 PM

And by the way, Hip-Hop is not dying off, and is far from wack. You must listen to everything in order to find out what artists are good and what artists are wack.

For whoever said 2003 sucks Hip-Hop wise, have you heard Sole's "Selling Live Water?"

err mostly anyways

G. Buttersworth 05-28-03 06:49 AM

lol@ Funcrusher Plus

lol@backpackers having no rhythm.

they say quality music... when all you can do is listen. what ever happen to dancing to music ,and expressing the rhythm through your body. i guess we have to just sit back and think now.. instead of taking pleasure in the spectrum of rhythm. thanks to the new age, and elevation, of the evolution of hip hop we must now listen to, mental provoking lyrics and express ourselves through varities of vocabularies instead of through dance. they call it "club shit".

sit back and listen... quit having fun and stimulate your mind with my perspective on thoughts and concepts. oh and don't dance... we all know you can't dance..thats for "club shit".

aesop is ill... but i can't make people dance to rhythmless illness.

my shit is... everything that involves the culture is good for rap/hip hop/hip pop/UG...whatever you want to call it. as long as the music is alive and kickin... i can careless. i don't want to be the only rapper left on the planet.

dope is dope to you, thats why it's dope.

nothings really wack until you do a collab with ja-rule.

sorry for the term paper.. but i am a hip hopper. and i'll never be wack and hip hop will always be ill... herb. leave RB.com and never rhyme again.
