Question for the seasoned...
I've been following rap forever...
Not religiously. But on and off, I'm very finicky about who I listen to. I'm a rattle off my biggest rap influences... Basically the only shit I've really listened to alot... I want the real niggas, the really gifted up in here... To drop their opinion on the talent of my influences.. And to drop the names of some really talented MC's who's CDs I should be checkin out. So far... Ice T (the first rapper I ever heard and my most respected of the gangsta genre) NWA (back in the day, they were the shit) Eazy E (caught his debut "Eazy Duz It" and was knocked over, the song, Boyz in the Hood, well, shit, I loved that whole album!) Public Enemy (honestly, only heard a few songs here and there, but what I heard was pretty amazing) DMX (found him in 1999, and thought "What's my Name", "Up in Here", etc was bad-ass...this guy resurrected rap for me) Eminem (hasn't everyone been influenced at least a little by him) Drop your opinions on these cats and direct me to some more talent, please. |
Right on, New Jack Hustler was the first Ice-T song I ever heard, NWA pioneered a whole new niche of hip hop that has been built on till today. Eazy had his moments, but I never really felt him solo. DMX has put out some good music. Ice Cube was the first album I ever owned in sixth grade, so I gotta give him props. KRS threw lyrics that made people think, and that still stands today.

**looks at his white skin and sighs** dumbass.. Ice T, NWA and Eazy E ^^yeah this is a good base for gangsta rap. but gangsta rap is dead. Public Enemy ^^old school, nice but lyrically weak by todays standards. DMX ^^he's a very angry....and wack rapper with a good producer backing him up. Eminem ^^yeah hes ill but hes also pretty much said everything he can say. go listen to: mos def- black on both sides wu tang clan- any album except "the w" busta rhymes- when disaster strikes redman- any album xzibit- any album blak twang- any album roots manuva- any album pzz. |
Ice T, NWA and Eazy E
Nice emcees back in the day, created a whole new era for rap, but not necessarily for hiphop, i feel they took the true essence away from it with 'Gangsta' rap Public Enemy ^Dope. Fight the power was the shit, a very good choice, not the best by todays standards i agree, but these guys were pioneers. DMX I admit to not being a big DMX fan, i dont like the whole 'Thug' concept, sorry. . Eminem Very talented lyricist, not scared to bring out his real feelings and express them poetically, very good choice my man. You Should Listen Too: Run DMC - Pioneers along with Public Enemy, chances are if you like P.E you'll like these guys too. Tribe Called Quest - always the positive feel to them, gave me a different take on life witht heir music. Aesop Rock: This kid is phenominal with his imagery and concepts, he's more for the backpacker era but i think you should at least give him a listen. |

Dude... Johnny 6 Feet... I appreciate your feedback on my question... But you gotta be a young motherfucker to not realize that the word, "nigga", when used how I used it... Means the hardcore, the dedicated, the ones who love this rap game... It has nothin to do with skin color... By reacting like ya did... Ya just let me know you ain't one of em'. But again, thanks for your opinion anyway. Everyone else...thanks much, people. |
listen to
dead prez Aesop Rock DJ Shadow El-P Sole Alias Dose One Chino XL Dos Noun Eyedea The Coup Just to name a few plus, DMX is wack. Eminem seems to be in the motion of taking a long walk off a short pier. |

^^Da fuck!???!?? Aiight then "MY Nigga" go down to wherever all the black poeple live in your town and say that shit and tell me if they gonna be impressed by your "connection to the real niggas"....The Fuck is you thinkin'!? Only excuse you may have is that if you grew up with a core of black cats and they 'LET' you say that word, but the random black person is gonna wanna beat yo ass. and I'm black and thats coming from a "real" nigga..... Seem to me you listen to the KRS and Cube c.d's TOO much..or not enough...dumb ass |
Oh my goodness...
FUCK OFF! How was that, nigga? I say what I fuckin want when I fuckin want to. I'm 33 years old. Ain't no one corrected me in person yet. Only over the internet... Where EVERYONE'S got big balls... But if ya were here, in my presence... You wouldn't say shit either. Otherwise, someone would have shut me up by now. But that ain't happened. |
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
k dude no offense and this shit shoudlnt really matter but the N word was invented so are u black or white? |
2pac - any album, he has made me realy appreciate rap.
Biggie - any album, his wordplay and ryhming is heavy. One of the best ever. LL - hes a legend, hes always been in with the times. Eminem - one of the best lyricists around, not a bad actor either. DMX - since his 1st album ive liked him, hes real. Gangstarr - Legends, the best duo ever, also like them coz there real. The first song I ever heard was Rappers Delight, not when it came out coz im only 18 but i can still listen 2 it now, this song made me follow hip hop. |
well eminem got me into rap. 5 years ago, heard him. then got his pay-per-view concert and discovered dre. that lead to snoop. then i heard DMX's who we be on MTV and decided to get some more rap. i still probably listen to alotta mainstream shit, but i have an NWA cd so its all good :p oh yeah i grew me a DMX beard a while ago (now i just gotta go bald, dont think ill do that)

Check out the list that MuhThugga tossed up, all quality. Also check out Slug, Sage Francis, Mr. Lif, Kweli, and Musab.
|
Er, *puts on pedant cap* - MuhThugga - DJ Shadow is a producer...not an emcee..
there's a lot. But here goes Rakim and Eric B (actually that should be Eric B and Rakim..) (especially 'Follow the Leader' which was produced by Eric B..i know, i know, but i thought i'd throw an oldie in looking at what he's heard..).. Sage Francis (lyrically brilliant...with great delivery to complement...some of the beats he does his stuff to aint bad either...Makeshift Patriot being absolutely fucking brilliant...).. Aesop Rock (Uses imagery and concepts so damn well, that maybe sometiems over does it. But then again, that's who he is. Another brilliant artist. And the man still has a part-time job allegedly doing some manual labour..)... Roots Manuva (diverse, wide ranging, fuses many differnet music forms into hip-hop...delivery is weird yet original and very good...and lyrics deep, cryptic yet full of so much...beats/tunes are brilliant...).. Dead Prez (..i can't be bothered to go on, so i'll just list some others, then i'm off...but yeah, kind of thought provoking pro-black sometimes extreme...but yeah, they bring up some real good points, and producing usually quite good too...)... Wu-Tang Clan Ras Kass (you just gotta..).. Afu-Ra (too many, and i got to go...i'm sure other people will drop the names of those who i didn;'t mention...but seroiusly, ROOTS MANUVA, Roots Manuva, check out his stuff...don't just check out a couple of tracks though...go through about 8-10, and don't try anf get right into it..just let it all flow...)... |
read the sig
Eazy-E, my fave by any standards.. yes, i did start listnin to him after he died, but i listened to NWA beore that.. i didnt get into there solo carrers, cuz MC Ren and DJ yella didnt really have one, MC Ren is still on Ruthless tho any way... eminem is ill, ppl hate him cuz if you white and ill, then your gunna be considered a knock off, thats what The Raptist faces now,[tho hes kinda brown, and rican rappers arnt really respected these day] listen to Bone Thugs Bone Thugs Bone Thugs Eazy-E EM and also listen to anyone who makes you want to rap,... it aint about what we think since you cast judgement upon jonny heres yours, by askin us on feed back for ur favorite MC's you proved us one things... you only in it for the fashion |

I know that, but if you just limit yourself to emcee albums, then you are missing out on half of the experience. Just trying to broaden the kid's perspective on music. |
ice t = trash

2 teckneek, i didnt put that i liked old LL, with songs like "Im Bad", "Jack the Ripper" instead of new LL. But you have 2 respect tha fact at how long hes been in the game. I mean how many rappers have there been that do like 2 albums and dissapear? loads
|
^^^YHea I got alot of respect for L, he got soft songs but, I mean shit look at the cats name! Ladies Love Cool James..so what the hell you think he gonna be about..but don;t get it twisted he still had the hard shit form time to time, "I shot ya", "4,3,2,1", "Mamma Said"..., "I'm bad", "Ill Bomb", he can rip when he wants too
|
just a couple now,the ones that come into my head,i have to many influences to mention...none are eminem sorry but i respect him as a good writer...just dont like him.
aesop rock...like everyone said before, his imagery and concepts are amazing, noone out there thinks like him, when you listen to his work, you can tell he has taken the time and effort to create his rhymes, multies everywhere, alliteration ike crazy on some tracks, his thoughts are hard to pick up when you firstlisten, but overtime it jsut goes straight into your head like woah. vaste aire...another original style,he blends battle rap with stroy telling, thought provoking, pretty much all rap types, hes mainly the battle rapper, but even so his raps are great to listen to ,hes one clever guy,you were a "still born baby, mother didnt want you but you were still born"...his style is slow and drawn out, like hes not even trying, jsu ttalking intot he mic, emphasis on words and voice change is good, all round an ill cat with many talents. wu-tang...the old wu tang is bette rthen now,but i listen to the iron flag release quite alot, onc eyou get past some of the strangeness and style changes of the memebers tha tyour not used ot the album becomes pretty solid,i listen to these gys, cause they are or were all about the hiphop culture, mixing hiphop with streetlife rhymes, seemingly random lines coming together into something that made sense, all artists have differet styles unlike some,i can barely tell the difference, but wu,there styles are so differnt all on on etrack they soun ill...36 chambers prooved that, mystery of chessboxin... cannibal ox...mostly listened to them to start off with because of vaste aire...but then vordul magalah grew on me,anothe group with different styles, vordul fast rhyming multi full spits grimy and hard, then vaste aire ,laid back and slowed down, greater emphasis on words etc.completly differnt styles comign together to form a dope duo.el-p's beats complement nicely wiht the lyric and voices. anticon-ive been listening to anticon for as long as i could remeber, starting from nothignness and dran out, they formed the anticon collective, unique styles, lyrics hip hop difference, style, preference and everythign liek that, they are diverse...alot of pesimism alla roudn them but its their veiwpoint of their lifes and their perspectives that got me listenign to them caus htey are much like my own, wierd ass beats constantly sshiftign rythm, vocals dropping and changing, sounds ghostly at times, thats why i listen to them, they are different from normal hiphop, more of a movemnt then anythign else over 20 strong now, with emcees,dj's,artists, writers, just the difference of their music, and their diversity as a collective of artists is what i like about it. atmoshpere,slug,eyedea,beyond-pretty much the whole rhyme sayers label, though i have missed some,i listen to them and am influenced by their faith in hiphop, they live hiphop completly, emotional lyrics, great beats, thought provoking words are what influences me about these rappers.they can write a story on anythign and have me listenign and feeling their emotions throughout the song. batle emcees-influences of battle emcees is more of a respect for them,i cant write battle rymes for shit, but i love to listen to battles, the punchlines delivered, trns hiphop into a game of wit,and timing, delivery is crucial, battle emcees that perfect this, are in need of big respect but they gain little, but htey stay determined, thats what i like about them,no matte rhwa tthey will keep battling, and their ability to keep grudges and freindships is good to listen to,they can put two best friends against eachother, drop lyrics that would piss eachother off,but walk off knowing its jsut a battle, and not to take it seriously, then you have the grudges come up,and those battles are some of the best to watch and listen to,complete hatred for one another for whatever reason, coming out on a mic by two well or more talented battle rappers that tookthe time to learn and elvate against the odds,is somehting to here, then even when the winner is decided the loser still does not whine or complain of unfairness or anything,he simply didnt win that day, next time would be different, battle emcees to me hold withthem a kind of hidden hounor, and carry the tradition thats been around for so long in hiphop,i respect all battle rapppers for it,to be as respectful and dedicated to hiphop as they are is what influences me about them. could keep goign but itll be too much to read,id come out with a book on this if i had the time, and there was somone to read it all,but eh... |
Man...
You guys really spit forth some good referrals... I picked up Fear of a Black Planet this weekend... Very angry. But very good. Not very strong in the wordplay ar metas...
