question to the literate

i'm just curious as to what types of books you read.

Also if you have a recommendation, glad to hear it.

As for me, my reading selection spans pretty broad. I'll read anything interesting, from bios of Dahmer and the like to Steinbecks classics... Lately I've been into government related books as well as activist studies.

Recommended read:Things fall Apart- Chinua Achebe, An Occurence at owl creek bridge- Ambrose Bierce, Dante's inferno... should I really keep going?

than u can read like Catch 22 if u a lil older, thats a good book

Axiom 09-04-03 01:05 AM

Hmm... i don't really read on my own, just books we've had to read at school. I like Steinbeck and Fitzgerald the most. The Grapes of Wrath and The Great Gatsby, and the ones already mentioned.

The Necromancer 09-04-03 01:22 AM

Personally, I thought the first seven or eight or so Tarzan of the Apes novels were the shiznit.

But I'll read generally whatever is good assuming I'm in the mood. But like, books are weird that way. You could be told this one book is a classic and everyone should read it, and have it turn out to be a peice of shit. But, you can also grab a book aint no one ever here of, and have it mean more to you then anything else.

Personally, I think the old testament, new testament, kuran, book of shadows, etc. etc. are all good books to read.

shiznit 09-04-03 01:29 AM

Crucible <--- its a play but i really enjoyed it..even the movie
Brave New World <----- stylish and very futuristic...pretty interesting over all.
The Great Gatsby (already mentioned)<---- I liked this a lot.
Catcher in the Rye (same)<----typical stuff..very enjoyable to read. Its like living the life of each of the characters.
Lord of the Flies <----- damn well written in a way. It was worth my time reading this. Its very adventrous
Harry Potter Books <-----ive read them all except the 5th one.
Their Eyes were watching God <-----somewhat good.
Stephen King ones. (Tommyknockers, It, and RoseRed)

Well way way way back i usually like to read those Sweet Valley High books. they were kinda amazing to me because way back then i was imagining being like american stuff and such...but oh well..those are just some of the books that ive read so far excluding some stuff that i read a long time ago that i cant remember anymore.

but yeah..thats it.

I used to read ALOT when i was younger, not so much now though, however we read novels and shit quite a bit in English Literature, 'Lord Of The Flies', 'Great Expectations', 'Jany Eyre' etc..

Also The Usual plays and stuff, 'Romeo n' Juliet' etc... When i was younger i read alot of story-type books, secret seven and shit when i was 6 or 7, then i got onto more factual things.

As i said, i rarely read a novel now.

self 09-04-03 12:51 PM

·Everything by Charles Dickens. One of my favourite authors ever.
·Edgar Allen Poe's stories and poems, even though their "short stories", I have the 'Complete Works Of Edgar Allen Poe" book...so yeah.
·Stephen King, great for horror. (It, Tommyknockers, etc.)
·John Irving - Cider House Rules (I haven't read it yet, but I own it and its on my "to read" list.
·Anne Rice - Her books on vampires, I have a couple, also on my "to read" list.
·"Go Ask Alice" - Anonymous. Great book, loved it, have it, could have sex with it (LoL, joking).
·"Prozac Nation" - Elizabeth Wurtzel. On my "to read" list...damn I got a lot to read.
·"Kingdom Come" - Jim Hougan. The book I'm reading right now, its pretty good, he's a mix between the older style of writing, and the new (less intriguing/complex/thought provoking) styles of today.

Oh...and in a year or two be on the look out for something by me...all I have to do is get it going, I've been so busy recently.

kgm 09-04-03 12:52 PM

Most of the books already mentioned are required to graduate high school. OK
Teachings Of Don Juan - Carlos Castaneda - good book about tripping out with a native shaman.
Tropic Of Cancer - Henry Miller - One of the best cult novels ever.
Cry Of The People - Will show you what really goes on in Latin America due to US policies.
Peoples History of The USA - Zinn - Will show you what we really did to get were we are as a country.
Ficciones - Jorge Borges - Dont really know how to explain this one, but good book.
Junky, Naked Lunch, or pretty much anything by William S. Burroughs

Accelerate 09-04-03 04:52 PM

I read
As You like it,Twelfth Night, and A Midsummer's Night Dream-by Shakespear
A good book is Night by Elie Weasel who tells of a concentration Camp
Of Mice and Men, The Red Pony- by John Steinbeck
Treasure Island and Kidnapped
Jurassic Park and The Lost World
The adventures of Tom Sawyer and
The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe-Cool books

G.Hod 09-04-03 06:51 PM

Catcher in the Rye is a joke; it was innovative back in the freaking thirties, but it surely isn't timeless.

-Don Quijote de la Mancha . . The original satire
-Bear v. Shark . . 21st Century Pop Culture satire
-The Cell . . Chronicled "Nine-Eleven. ." Biased beyond belief, but interesting

edit: Varentao jogged my memory; Animal Farm might be the best book I've ever read.

I read very few books. Actually, haven't read one in over a year. I can remember reading 'The Crucible' in English class. I also read these short stories by Jumpa Lahiri. Animal Farm is good. I vaguely remember this fictional book of Irish life in the 50s or something. A poor family or something. Wait...Reading In the Dark by Seamus Deane. Was my sisters i think, i robbed it off her. Read that 2 years ago, and it now sits on my shelf with some other books. Half of which i haven't read.

Romeo and Juliet (the play, like the Crucible). Midsummers Night Dream, also a play.

There's probably others. Tintin (which is a comic really, but in book form, kind of...) is the one that stands out for me. I dunno, it's simple fiction. Quite a lot of parodisation or whatever.

A2Z 09-04-03 07:41 PM

Must reads for anyone who loves education and a better understanding of life, history and the universe. I am currently studing in the field of Astrobiology, and most of these books I have just read in the last few months...

Science:

Astrobiology: The origin of life and the death of Darwinism
Evolutionary Metamorphosis. By: Rhawn Joseph
(Very fascinating and well researched I recommend it for the scholars out there)

Life Everywhere, the new science of Astrobiology
By: David Darling
(By far my favorite book on this subject. I absolutley recommend it to everyone. It has had a true impact on my life and beliefs. A great book, for all, no matter your level of education.)

Guns Germs and Steel: The fate of human societies
By: Jared Diamond
(A great read on a touchy topic, but what insight this book offers.. I thinks it's worth the time to read)

The bride of science, romance, reason and byron's daughter
By: Benjamin Wooley
(Another must read, it's taken from the perspective of a female, and it's simply amazing, I will give it to my daughter when she is old enough to comprehend it.)

History:

The future of freedom:
By: Fareed Zakarai
(self explanatory tittle, it's very appropriate considering today's social and political unrest's I tend to research things before I attempt to speak or text on them)

Empire
By: Niall Ferguson
(lessons for global power learned from the rise and fall of the British new world order, very good book. I reccomend to everyone here on RB, before posting in the discussion threads..lol)

Of paradise and power
By: Robert Kagan
(now this is a jewel, it depicts the tensions between europe and America, unbiasly describes the views of each through the eye's of both europe and America. It's something everyone is going to make reference to when discussing the strained relations between europe and the United States.. In my mind it's a must read..)

Now on to more fun reading..

Astronomy:

On the shoulders of giants: the great works of physics and astronomy
By: Stephen W. Hawking
(an incredible presentation of some of the worlds most remarkable research and published works. I feel bleesed just to have read work by such amazing people, brilliant minds indeed)

Einstiens Clocks, Poincare's Map's: Empires of time
By: Peter Galison
Albert Einstein, a young, obscure German physicist experimenting with measuring time using telegraph networks and with the coordination of clocks at train stations; and the renowned mathematician Henri Poincare, president of the French Bureau of Longitude, mapping time coordinates across continents. Each found that to understand the newly global world, he had to determine whether there existed a pure time in which simultaneity was absolute or whether time was relative."

^ I have to tell you, I felt very insignificant after reading this book, these men were on a level I could not attain in all my life... And then some, heavy hitter's in the field of science, wow, is all I can say. A real mind bender if your not geared for math and physics...

Jes 09-05-03 12:54 AM

i've read of paradise and power. I actually read it while I was on vacation in Scotland, right after 9/11

Parallex 09-10-03 06:22 AM

Dean Koontz fan here...
Amazing storyteller, sometimes replays the same ideas but believable characters and intricate plot twists make him king in my eyes
Also James Patterson Jack and jill, Kiss the girls, along came a spider etc. Fucking heavyweight author
