Opinions Wanted. .

Heh. .
i dunno what you guys listen to nowadays but for me - what im into now i dont even class as hiphop, id class it as a form of poetry.
I got pretty into underground stuff from last year, caught into the hype of Aesop etc, started understanding more about the way he wrote and what made him dope, it wasnt his vocab / flow etc, but his ability to show his writers voice over a track with emotion and complexity while still remaining pretty abstract and doing it for his love of the music. Gradually i got into the Living Legends and Aceyalone and what they do is a LONG way away from what i first considered hiphop. Its not like they have the greatest flow or anything, its just that what they are stating is so real and powerful, their writers voice accompanied with a beat that fits the emotional side is some of the best ive heard ever, very poetic, but i wouldnt consider them hiphop, id say their more poetry-esque, spoken word over a beat. But i dont class them as hiphop even though thats basically what they do.

Your thoughts?

OutWrite 10-07-03 02:12 PM

Its Not

Lokinator 10-07-03 02:30 PM

Oh

Ok

Accelerate 10-07-03 03:33 PM

I Think Your Right. I Find It To Be More Poetic Than What I Consider Hip-Hop Right Now. But Hip Hop Is a Culture, Even Still Like All Music, It Evolved to Form Something Else, Maybe soon The Underground Artists Will Get Their Respect, Like Hip Hop Began To Get Exposure in The Late 80s.

Salvation 10-07-03 06:56 PM

fuck hip hop

C-Section 10-07-03 06:56 PM

yes thats hip hop. thats what common and mos def do. kayne west and roscoe p cold chain are pretty good too.

-ElocuShun- 10-07-03 07:30 PM

cam ya sound like ya really into ya poetry deep now...............................aight coz ya from england (so am i)y dont ya ever do any of the open rap/poetry tryouts that take place...................there ill......kelashnekov.....was discovered there........anyways good luk

Mental God 10-07-03 07:33 PM

<----is really into poetry also... im editor for a magazine for my school... i got to make a feature poet for the month and i chose slug... i got alot of people at my school to download some of his music and now in the school parkin lot i heard god loves ugly all over the place... its funny too cause they all act like they been listening to him for years or somethin

D-Dizzle 10-07-03 07:38 PM

I'm finding myself drifing more and more toward that type of hip-hop..and yes I do think it's hip-hop just a different kind...I listen to it sometimes just to change from the same old shit all the time....all the club shit is coo..but I don;'t feelin like dancin all the damn time..the thug shit is cool..but it ain;t good for your health walking 'round mad all the time so....thats my in between music..I guess me being a artist myself even if I don;t like a particular style I still respect it for what it is.....ITs a place for all of that shit..even though sometimes I get turn off by how some of these backpack emcees just have total disdane for the beat and just spittin words all over the place and pass it off like, "yhea thats my style, I'm on that next shit"..naw nigga you just off-beat....

Gonzo 10-07-03 08:42 PM

Hmm, If its not classified as Hip-hop, then what is it?

Id still say it was hip-hop, just a different Genre, one thasts yet to be really discovered..Or you could be broad about it and call it underground..Most commercial cats dont go for the poetic thing..But there are some cats who amaze me, such as

Eminem
Talib Kweli
Rise

I think all those folks have unreal lyrical skills..and there commercial (for the most Part)

I definatley enjoy the lyrical content of music more than the hypeness of it.. A good line is worth more than all that "Throw your hood up" Bullshit

Anyways, speaking of Poetic songs... Im tellin you..

Fuck it, Im makin a thread for it.. Peep trhe next thread I make..

varentao 10-08-03 09:29 PM

Well that's how it started. With the Last Poets doing their spoken word poetry over bare beats (African drums usually...)...

I agree, there's many out there who combine poetry and hip-hop to good effect. It's all about your definition of poetry. And what kind impresses you and what not.

Do you like to dig? Or is the more simple the most effective? Are finding the different layers over time what hits hard? Or the blunt emotionally driven bare lines what catch your ear?

Also, the apparent simplicity of certain things can hide a lot of depth. And be subtely abstract. Now that's masterful. And also the most complex can be so simple and elementary..

Poetry varies so much. But yeah, it's nice to see the 'Aesop Rock type' pushing forward.

Precise. 10-09-03 12:04 AM

UK Hip Hop is sorta like acid. Shit seems there. . but i'll always be fake.

varentao 10-09-03 12:43 AM

UK Hip-Hop will always be fake?

Methinks the acid is beginning to 'work', Cloud Man...

get to the part with hectate.. that is pure poetry, even
though the scene was written at a later date than the rest of
the play.

Crysis 10-09-03 01:14 AM

i see where cam is comin from on this....but hip hop can be just like poetry in a way...hip hop is music while poetry is spoken word....well when you put the two together it just forms something bigger...something better...its just dope....and i feel where your comin from on this cam....and yes aceyalone is the shit....the song "I think i know too much" is just flat out dope...you all should listen to that shit

wogzta 10-09-03 01:22 AM

I think its all hip hop, just a different style of hip hop. Personally, I think for something to be classified as hip hop it just needs one thing: the music. Thats the unique thing to it; it has a different sound to rock, pop, metal, etc.

Then u can split it up into categories... for example, if the vocals are sung, then its RnB, if they are spoken, its rap.. then u can break rap into poetic, intellectual, gangsta, etc.. its all just different styles of hip hop for different people.. personally, i enjoy all of it, as long as its meaningful and showcases some of the artists skill

Now Everyone Is Jumping On The Band Wagon..

If You All Love It So Much, Start Topical .. Hoes..

Mr.Christensen 10-09-03 02:53 AM

im trying topicals...just in dire need if elevation

i have heard a few (2 or 3) of these types of raps so i cant give a great opinion on it...but from what i did hear it is a nice style and id like to hear some more...recomendations...

Dude, It's a Play. Not Poetry

varentao 10-09-03 07:25 PM

^I think he means it's written in a sort of poetic form. Which in a sense, it is.

No one is arguing it's a play. Or at least, i don't think so.
