Cannibal's confession shocks court

Kassel, Germany—A German computer expert confessed yesterday to killing and eating a willing victim, telling a shocked courtroom the experience was "like taking communion" in a religious service.

Armin Meiwes, 42, who lived in a former manor house in Rotenburg, some 35 kilometres southeast of this central German town, gave chilling testimony at the start of his murder trial about how his fantasy of finding someone to become "a part of me" turned real.

Meiwes, a poised, slender man wearing a dark suit and tie, described matter-of-factly how Bernd Juergen Brandes, 43, travelled from Berlin to visit him in March, 2001, after replying to an Internet ad seeking a young man for "slaughter and consumption."

In testimony so frank it drew gasps from the public gallery, Meiwes said he'd kept his victim's skull and plastic bags of flesh in his freezer. He ate about 20 kg of the flesh, defrosting it bit by bit.

"With every piece of flesh I ate I remembered him," the bespectacled, well-spoken Meiwes told the judge. "It was like taking communion."

Meiwes said his cannibalistic fantasies began as a child when, living alone with a dominant mother, he imagined killing and eating a "younger brother."

Using the pseudonym "Franky," he posted Internet ads saying: "If you are 18-25 you are my boy" or "Come to me I'll eat your delicious flesh."

More than 400 people responded, among them Brandes, a 43-year-old Berlin computer specialist.

Meiwes invited him to his elegant home Rotenburg. When they met, he said, Brandes undressed. "Now you can see my body. I hope you'll find me tasty," Meiwes quoted him as saying.

"He told me he had had the desire since he was a child to be slaughtered and eaten," he said. "He was very intelligent and I didn't see any sign that he was disturbed."

Meiwes killed him with a kitchen knife in a "slaughtering room" he'd built containing meat hooks, a cage and a butcher's table, and filmed the killing.

Defence lawyers have said the video shows Meiwes cutting off the victim's penis at the latter's request.

"It was important to him that his member be cut off and that he witness it," Meiwes said.

"He screamed terribly and jumped around the table but after a while he said he was surprised it didn't hurt and was very pleased that the wound bled so strongly," he added.

"It gave him pleasure."

Eventually the victim — who said he wanted to be stabbed to death after drinking a bottle of cold medicine — lost consciousness. Meiwes killed him with a knife, hung up the corpse and cut it up.

"My friend enjoyed the dying, his death," Meiwes recently told a local newspaper.

Germany has no laws against cannibalism, and prosecutors were forced to employ a little-used murder statute to charge Meiwes. They concede the victim wanted to be killed, but argue he was incapable of rational thought.

Seeking to bolster his claim that he acted according to the wishes of others, Meiwes testified he had at least five other respondents to his Internet ads visit his home but let them go — including a teacher who offered himself as a "devoted pig for slaughter."

Thirty-eight witnesses are expected to testify in the trial.

The victim, a computer engineer, then sold all his possessions including a car before disappearing, the paper reports.

The state prosecutor's office in Kassel said the man died from deep cuts to the neck. The killer then chopped up the body and kept the parts in his fridge.

Police believe the murder occurred in spring 2000.

They found deep-frozen human flesh, skeleton parts and video recordings at the scene.

Neighbour Joerg Paulusen, speaking to Reuters TV, said of the killer: "It was sort of clear to us that he had a different perspective on life than we did, but he was a normal person, to speak to him, drink a glass of beer with him - just like you and me."

The last alleged case of cannibalism in Germany was when a 33-year-old man on trial for robbery and murder in March 1995 claimed to have eaten his victim's innards, although his claim was never proven, the AFP news agency reports.

As an aspiring gangsta rapper trying to make his bones, Antron Singleton took the phrase way too literally. So charges a lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Last year, Singleton, a Suge Knight protégé whose stage name is Big Lurch, allegedly killed his roommate, Tynisha Ysais, and ate a piece of her lung.

While Singleton awaits his criminal trial, the victim's mother has sued him, Knight's label (formerly Death Row Records), Stress Free Records, and two employees, alleging that Knight's label had encouraged him to behave violently in order to earn gangsta-rap street cred that would boost record sales.

According to Reuters, Singleton faces murder and torture charges after having been found on a Los Angeles street last April, staggering, naked, and covered in blood. In an apartment nearby, police said they found Ysais' body, with teeth marks on her face and pieces of her lung torn from her chest. A medical examination found human blood and flesh in Singleton's stomach, police said.

Singleton, who had done guest work with such rappers as Mystikal, was recording his own album for Knight's label. (Formerly Death Row, then Tha Row, the label is now called Death Row's Back, Knight told MTV News last week.) The civil suit, filed by Carolyn Stinson, the 21-year-old victim's mother, said the label had given Singleton drugs ''to encourage [him] to act out in an extreme violent manner so as to make him more marketable as a 'Gangsta Rap' artist.'' The suit continued, ''Part of what makes a gangsta rap artist marketable is the fact that the artist is a current ongoing participant in violent gang activities. Singleton met this criteria and was even more marketable because his songs were as violent as his lifestyle and included rape, murder and ended with him eating his victim's body organs.'' Singleton's real-life acts of violence ''were performed within the course and scope of his employment with the other defendants,'' the suit said. Knight's lawyer, David Chesnoff, told Reuters he had not seen the suit and could not comment.

What's sad is that this gross act will probably not hold as tough a punishment as killing someone in the street as a means of survival. If you have to blast your way out of a bad situation and kill someone in the process you'll get more time in prison than comsuming someone. It's seems as if the prosecution admits the guy was only doing what the victim wanted. Like in the case of Dr. Kavorkian, assisted death is a far smaller crime than homocide.

Well I suggest that all you net thugs out there (and you know who you are) ever have to kill someone (cuz you're hard as shit), make sure you eat a portion of the victim. Then later you can use either insanity or canibolism as a means to reduce your sentence... This is whack!
