Is Nas One "True Classic" away from being "G.O.A.T."?

Saw this on another board and i was wondering what ya'll think, is Nas 1 "True Classic" (Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic/I.W.W., 36 Chambers, The Chronic etc.) from being considered the GOAT? 1luv.

Word Bond 12-13-03 08:11 PM

illmatic is better than all those

and i think he's already g.o.a.t

Gunman tha Great 12-13-03 08:16 PM

what is "I.W.W" nope he aint, he lost the GOAT belt with Nastradamus. He isn't even on my top 5. Every album after It was written has sucked.

Da NFamous 12-13-03 08:18 PM

^ lol I.W.W. is It Was Written, 1luv.

wogzta 12-13-03 08:29 PM

I know this sounds stupid, but what is G.O.A.T?

Gunman tha Great 12-13-03 08:43 PM

Greatest Of All Time. LL Cool J had an album out with that name.

wogzta 12-13-03 09:02 PM

^ thanks for that

Nah, Nas only really has one true classic, which is Illmatic. It Was Written, Stillmatic, and God's Son are near classics, but I Am and Nastradamus were poo-poo.

But what is a true classic? I mean, how would you judge it?

Yuk 12-13-03 09:03 PM

A true classic, is a cd that you can listen to 4yrs afterits came out...Illmatic is very official...Also, it only had about 8 tracks? which made the fans focus on those tracks only...There wasnt any this track sucks that track sucks, cause there were only 8 tracks that were bangers....

wogzta 12-13-03 09:08 PM

^ i guess so... but i wouldnt consider the chronic a true classic.... it has repetitive beats and lyrically, kurupt is the only rapper who consistently comes off nice. Old Snoop occassionally has some good lyrics, but that's pretty much it. Not to mention that the whole album is gangstafied with no real meaning. But i guess it did revolutionize hip-hop in terms of beats... but i still wouldnt call it a true classic, in fact, dre 2001 is better in my opinion

Word Bond 12-13-03 10:02 PM

he can't just lose the title of g.o.a.t

and if he did he got it back with stillmatil and god son and really on the lost tapes

and fuck sayin he fell off because really big and pac was about to fall of the just died before the could

C-Section 12-13-03 10:08 PM

rakim>nas

and add death to escobar and lost tapes to the list of good nas CDs,

he is good but not greatest of all time.

Bigg E Z 12-13-03 10:16 PM

i listen ot illmatic everyday.....for the last 4 yrs...

dot ask why....its become a routine....

I dont even have nas in my top 15 either..

Gunman tha Great 12-14-03 12:09 AM

Big was just starting to run victory laps on people. Listen to "Life after death" and tell me he was about to fall off. Listen to Makaveli and tell me Pac was about to fall off. And allow me to define a classic.

Nobody can listen to an album one time and say "boom thats a classic" shit don't work like that. A classic is an album that can withstand years of changing music tastes. When you have a classic you treat the cd different, you NEVER have that bitch out, always in a case or str8 to the cd player, you NEVER or almost never lend it out to people for fear they'll fuck it up, and if you lose it, you have no problem buying another one. You listen to a classic so much you know EVERY line of EVERY song on that bitch, yet every time you listen to it, you find a new favorite part or line on the cd. Here is a list of classics

Public Enemy-takes a nation of millions to hold us back-just tha fucking title is classic

Biggie-Ready to Die-Took me 3 years to believe "gimmie the loot" was just him

Jay-Z-Reasonable Doubt-talked about hustling like everybody else, but touched on it wayyyyy differently

Nas-Illmatic-not 2 many songs, not to many guest spots, stripped down hiphop

Biggie-Life After Death-I own two of these, one hasn't breathed a breath of fresh air (means its still in the plastic), probably the most bite off album of all time

Pac-All Eyez on me-that doesn't happen, Life After death doesn't happen, plain and simple, and it brought an entire coast to dominance

Snoop-Doggystyle-put gangsta rap on the map (even though its been run down to rubish now)

Ice Cube-Amerikka's most wanted-"i'm your worst nightmare, a crazy ass nigga wit a brain"

Jay Z-Blueprint-fuck what ya heard, cuz NOTHING could've prepared you 4 this

2Pac-Makaveli-shit still got emcees shook, and is still the cd most of your favorite emcees of 2day look 4 inspiration.

Outkast-Atliens-better then Stankonia, only by like 1 song, every fucking song on here is ill shit

Eric B and Rakim-Paid in Full-get ya respect up

Big Daddy Kane-Aint no half stepping-without that, your favorite BK rappers don't exist

Tribe Called Quest-fucking 4got the name of it, they 3rd one.

Wu-Tang Clan-36 Chambers-

and just cuz it changed everything from that "glittery money" shit
DMX-Its Dark and Hell is Hot
thats it in my opinion

wogzta 12-14-03 12:32 AM

^ yeah you got it spot on.... thanks for defining the classic

i'd add:

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP (brought something new original, and lyrically strong with lots of emotion and)

Aesop Rock - Labor Days (do I even have to give a reason?)

2pac - Me Against The World (meaning, raw emotion, good lyrics)

Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol.2 (great politics and meaning, dope delivery and lyrics, excellent wordplay)

.. just some of my personal favourites that i think deserve a spot

wogzta 12-14-03 12:33 AM

^ oh yeah, and Straight Outta Compton by NWA

Word Bond 12-14-03 12:51 AM

wogzta you should not talk on matters of hip hop go to an artfag site or something with that aesop shit and for you to think The Marshall Mathers LP with something good you and "new" then that proves to me you do not know what you talkin about

and to gunman yes the were about to fall off, abd when you first hear a classic you know what's up you know it's a classic, classics don't happen over time, you don't pick it up one day and say "wait a sec, there nothing worng with this, matter a fact this is a more than good", no you know it's all dope then first time

Accelerate 12-14-03 12:07 PM

The MMLP was just a bit creative "shock" music.

Nas could only be described as G.O.A.T by what people think of him when he's gone. Don't kill me for this next remark, but we might never know who will be the truest greatest of all time. I mean, to me Jay-Z might not be considered any good because people are riding 2Pac. 2Pac had some great poetic moments, but in some ways image plays a part. Why is Biggie considered number 2? I felt both were on the same level lyrically. Maybe Biggie is number 2 because alot of people won't swallow their pride to say that the fat kid who everyone would've picked on could have been a better emcee. But it depends on what they accomplished.

Gunman tha Great 12-15-03 11:19 AM

how does this 12 year old Jai Blaze say Big was about to fall off? He got BETTER with his second album, that shows growth, so how does he go from growth to falling off? let me guess, your dad is your uncle so you have "special gifts" to see the future? Nas aint the Greatest, wanna know why? "Shorty whats your price",that annoying ass "I can", that horrible verse on "quick to back down" and a slew of others. Plus he has had to many lackluster albums,(Ever album after It was Written is rubish) like i said he isn't even in my top 5 anymore, and from that "quick to back down" bullshit, he is slipping out of my top 10.

Gunman tha Great 12-15-03 11:20 AM

oh and u don't just say "hey this is a classic" a classic changes hiphop, so explain to me how you change hiphop the second you hear a record? yeah u can't go over there in the corner, u are on time out.

Jai Blaize 12-15-03 11:23 AM

i didnt say BIG was about to fall off, he's my fav. of all time...

???

Jai Blaize 12-15-03 11:25 AM

why is my name in this when i havent even posted before in this thread besides this and ^^^...

nas could easily be the goat... i can was lyrical education.. and quick to back down is nasty, he's just sick...

Kclipz 4 Murkin 12-15-03 01:38 PM

hmm i agree with mos of wat yall put but dont u think like G.O.A.T in like battlin who do u think that would be????
Id say Canibus or Copywrite then

Word Bond 12-15-03 05:08 PM

Canibus or Copywrite mos def ain't the g.o.a.t of battlin but thats another story start that thread if you want

and gunman if you wanna talk about bullshit come on, big was rollin with muthafuckin puff daddy come on now, talk about money and shit and nas is better than big anyone knows point blank, "i can" was dope and classic's don't have to change the game, comeon now i really don't think anything could change the game right now

and i don't know why you were sayin Jai Blaze, i said big was about to fall off unless he said it to

Jai Blaize 12-15-03 05:26 PM

nas aint betta den big, lol.. but thas my opinion..

Tuff Target 12-15-03 09:06 PM

some classics that havent been mentioned

death certificate-ice cube (the original mr. dontgive a fuck)
only built 4 cuban linx-rae(cant believe yall slept on the chef)
at the speed of life-xzibit(elevated west coast rap)

my opinion

good definition of a classic dawg

Da NFamous 12-15-03 09:36 PM

^Amerikkkas Most Wanted was better but to adress some comments I Can was a good song, it just wasnt a good single, 1luv.

MuhThugga 12-15-03 11:28 PM

I love The Lost Tapes.....listen to that and Illmatic the most.....

wogzta 12-16-03 06:05 AM

Word Bond, shut your mouth you piece of shit. Just cos you can't get your head out of your dirty ass and realise Aesop is quality music, doesn't mean you have to badmouth the people that like his stuff. I don't care if you dont like him, but dont say he is garbage cos you cant understand what hes saying because of your miniscule brain size. Anyway, i guess your one of those "anti-white" "rap-fans" since you think eminem sucks too. Your personal opinion doesnt mean shit, so dont insult people who have a different one.

menolin 12-16-03 08:13 AM

nas aint a goat, but he is one of the best,
at the end of the day it will all come down to personal choice, if you asked most people 'who is the greatest rapper of alll time'
personally, i only own one nas album, which is nastradamus (present) but i have heard most of his songs. And lyrically e is speakin some ill shit, but for me the greatest album that will ever be made is one were

-every lyrics is great
-every beat is great

i ant sayin i dont like nas cos he has shit beats sometimes, i jut aint iinto was hes doin, but i respect him.

there will be no greatest of all time what peeps will agree on.

aiight

peace

Word Bond 12-16-03 10:08 AM

i never said i did't like eminem i said i don't think mmlp was even his best

and shut the fuck up you don't know what aesop is sayin, shiiiit aesop himself don't know what he's sayin

and i never said i diss like white emcee's, so don't put word's in my mouth

and maybe you feel smarter just cause you listen to aesop rock because he use's big words but you are infact dumber for that, and i know this for a fact cause you said i have a " miniscule brain size" just cause i don't like him, THINK FOR YORSELF

The trick is to not interpret word for word.

Accelerate 12-16-03 06:21 PM

^words of wisdom. Some taken literally, others must be interpreted.

That's not exactly true b\c I can listen to any 2pac album years after... I still am... I still have my original copy of Strickly for my niggaz ha... but does that make it a classic? No

Baron Mynd 12-16-03 08:21 PM

I actually feel Nas's illmatic was his peak, and since that he's hit a decline.

wogzta 12-17-03 03:14 AM

The trick is to not interpret word for word.

Muhthugga sonned you without even trying, Bond's Underwear.. I mean Word Bond.

Aesop is a poetic rapper, you don't take it word for word. He uses metaphors, similes, all kinds of wordplay. he might say one thing, but mean another. And I do know what hes saying, most of the time. Anyone who knows what hes saying knows he has talent. And you didnt say " I dont like Aesop". You said "go to artfag site with that Aesop shit". That to me looks like a bland attack on his musical talent, not a personal matter of "i like" or "i dislike". And MMLP was Eminem's best. Challenge that, and I'll gladly own you. The only thing that you could even compare the MMLP to (out of eminems own music) is SSLP, but even that wasnt as good.

Gunman tha Great 12-17-03 12:06 PM

"I can" was ok don't call it a classic, people just consider it a classic cuz of the timing. "Quick to backdown" was bullshit, he had the nerve to say "the roots aint real hiphop for fucking wit Jay" but Lil John and the Eastside Boys are? And Biggie would murder Nas and even Nas knows that. Get off Nas' dick, no matter how hard u jock him, he won't adopt you.

C-Section 12-17-03 12:30 PM

typical aesop rock fan, you guys act like his songs have some type of hidden meaning, when he said it himself that most of his songs are just personal stuff that only he could understand, and he never understood how other people clame to understand his music.

and he said laughs, cause sometimes his fans come up to him with better explanations to his songs then he had, cause he though he was just going on about nothing, then someone comes up to him talking about some bullshit meaning behind the song that had no meaning to it

High-Ku 12-17-03 12:39 PM

^^^Um...you have a link to an article or an interview where he says that? If so I'd like to see it. For real, 'cause I'm sick and fuckin' tired of sitting there trying to figure out what the fuck he means by some of the shit he says. If there isn't any meaning to it, then fuck it I'll just sit back, listen and enjoy. I'm not gonna sit here and claim that I understand even half of what the fuck that kid says. But I enjoy his music becuase a lot of the imagery he uses in his songs makes me think. Not about what he was trying to say, just about past personal experiences, future possibilities, fantasies that probably aren't feasable or attainable for me, shit like that. So if his lyrics really don't mean shit, then I'd like to give up trying to decipher his heiroglyphic ass flow and just enjoy it for what it's worth. It's something different and something that's real enjoyable to just unwind and zone out to.

wogzta 12-18-03 01:22 AM

I made the mistake of saying "i understand aesop most of the time" i meant to say "i dont understand most of the time, but i do enjoy it for the times i know what he means"
