Is It EQ'ing?

I recorded this song today and for some reason there are way too many highs. So I try to EQ it but when I do that it just sounds all muffled.

So my question is this, Is there something else that I should try messing with to get that sound out?

nope. jsut EQing. if your shit sounds THAT muffled, try turning up your high mids and mids in general. if it sounds like an AM radio, you went too far.

you mic has a lot to do with it. garbage in garbage out. start off with a mic that records garbage vocals, you're gonna end up with EQ'd garbage vocals lol.

I have an AKG Perceptions mic. I'm pretty sure that's not a "garbage" mic. Any advice on mixing techniques?

i had this same problem, just set your recording level lower and turn the volume up using cool edit. and dont normalize or that will fuck wit it too, i just do effects- amplitude- amplify.. w/ 3dB or 6dB boost. doesn't go in the red or muffle barely ever, and if it does i just mess wit the volume on cool edit. so just set the recording level lower

well, its not GARBAGE, but i wouldn't call it studio gear either. its a hobby mic.

with that said, the perception is infamous for its processed highs and blurry lows (which some people actually believe is warmth). truthfully man you need to EQ in the mids to get any kind of sweet sound out of that thing. that's where everything in that mic lies. also in the highs (like 14k or so) to crispen it up. i mean, im saying this without hearing a stitch of how you processed your audio, but knowing the character of that mic this is how i would advise you to go. little in the lows, maybe a little in the low mids. work the mids. a little in the highs. the end.

if you're relying on "presets" to make your shit sound good, you're fucked. do it from a baseline or forever be content with subpar music.

Alright thanks guys. I'll use that advice and then let you know what happens.

what i do is use the de-essers from FFT or dynamics processing, not sure what kinda high you're dealing with but that mostly helps discretely and doesn't destroy much else.
