Its only pointless if you look at it superficially...

Terumoto 09-14-06 07:57 AM

Actually, its quite the contrary.

Pointless things are one of the rare things that arent superficial in the "reality" of our society.

They are superficial in the way you can glaze over them and say they are pointless when infact you did them as a natural reaction when the opportunity arised.

I find it odd... You said before you never do anything for no reason. So you're out of your comfort zone here. I do pointless things all the time. In fact my life has no point. I thought you were smarter than acting as if you know all about things that are outside your scope of experience? (Not that im trying to imply im better than you or anything, pointless things are exactly what their name states. Unconstructive, illogical, meaningless, without value.)

I dont understand where you get superficial from. Pointless things are far from superficial, in fact they are at the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Did them as a natural reaction when the opportunity arised? What does that even mean?

A natural reaction to what? And what "opportunity?" If they were a natural reaction, everybody would be doing them. And there is no opportunity, because you can do them whenever you want. Actually, you do pointless things out of the blue. That is IF they really are pointless.

I mean people go for walks, play sports, make music, fool around, but usually its for a point and not truly pointless. For example instead of walking for the sake of walking or sitting for the sake of sitting, they do it to gain something (fitness or whatever it may be). Or they have rests in between periods of work not purely to relax or rest, but so that they can work more efficiently when they get back to working.

What I gather from this post..

Is that you feel your life is somehow enlightened by some non-conceptual method of performing random acts that nobody but yourself can understand.

Followed by a bunch of hypotheticals that ultimatly end up purposeful..

By the way.. You still havnt told me anything you do thats truely random...

What I gather form your post... Is that you read way too much into things!

I know those hypotheticals end up purposeful, that was the point of me mentioning them. Do you mean that even if they were done for no reason instead of some alterior motive, they would still have a purpose?

By your philosophy, nothing I ever do is random. But its possible for me to do pointless things out of the blue.

OK, howbout if I walk? Not for any particular reason. Not to get somewhere. Not for exercise. Not even for the sake of walking. I just... Walk.

You'd be walking to prove a point......

Terumoto 09-14-06 11:01 AM

No, I have actually done that before. Any example I give you is a real thing that has happened, not something I simply would do.

So why did I walk?

There would be a deeper psychological reason possibly even beyond your knowledge of how your brain works that caused you to do this thing.

Mad Dog 09-14-06 11:04 AM

^ because signals in your brain told your legs to move and you obviously had a destination that you wanted to be at even if it was to get up, walk in 75 circles and sit down in the exact same spot...there's a reason as to why you did that and that's to do it it's not accidental or random...you just, did it...and DEEP down there's a reason to why you did it no matter how pointless it may seem

P.S: by telling us about "pointless" things you claim to have done...you've now given those examples a reason because you have now made this thread...

so if anything you're reason for doing things for no reason is to tell us about them

and if you actively hide things

then you're reason for doing things for "no reason" is to actively not tell us about them...

Terumoto 09-14-06 11:05 AM

Pointless - Without force, meaning, or relevance.

Even if there were some reason like that (which is a long shot), it still isnt relevant. It has no point whatsoever if I just walk. There is no meaning or relevance behind the action.
