Question about Hooks

whats up everyone? Im gettin into producing and mixxing my own stuff. im currently running Acid 4.0 and Sound Forge 7.0. Im wondering how to make my hooks sound professional (minor effect), without over effecting the crap out of them (and makin the sound like a $15 mic). If anyone is familiar with these programs, or can point in the right direction anyway with help, plz get back at me. Thnks in advance...

the program doesn't matter, they all do the same basic shit.

And what you're asking about is just some slight reverb and playing with the EQing to differentiate the hook vocals from the vrse vocals. tricks of the trade type stuff

any patterns in particular sound especially good? im aiming for a commercial type sound, but im also interested in mixtape sounds too. so any advice?

Now remeber sonny, the Hook should always contain the name of the song..

WhoAmI 06-23-06 01:32 PM

^^^that is bullshit

it doesn't have to at all

Golden shellz 06-23-06 01:36 PM

true not all hooks have the name of the song. Be original playboy do what you do, just like Apexx said you gotta mess with the Eq's.

hate to give you the least wanted answer in history but "it depends".

What commercial sound are you searching for? And what mixtape sound are you searching for?

every artist uses a different type of EQ set, like Jay-Z uses reverb tricks, and 50 uses heavy harmonic tricks, for example, so it's easier to identify the sound you're looking for by song or by artist or by album because there's so many different sets.

7.Curse 06-24-06 08:57 PM

lol. i expected an answer similar to that. but the sounds im lookin for

for commercial...say Gunit
for UG...say Knocturnal

if u can help me with that, id b very appreciative. thanx in advance, hope u can help. (if there are any EQ settings u use, can u pass em along so i have a base to start with when im experimenting?)

thnx

^^well you're in luck since both G-Unit and Knoc both rely on harmic tricks. You can get a similar efect by recording your hook in different tones of voice in 3 layers, instead of all in one layer. like one medium, one high and one low. from there, soften em and you're ready to go.

yea i need to learn some of this..lol i usually record the hook in the same tone as the song, then go back and do 1 or 2 more over that with different tones...sorta like ^ he said..lol but maybe i need somethign more...

7.Curse 06-25-06 05:50 AM

sweet...thank u very much Apexx. that shud help song quality immensely.

word man, keeping out of that comfortable tone sets the other layers up to work beautifully together.

7.Curse, no problemo mayne.

fuckin idiot i'm writing songs on the regular so i am perfectly qualified to tell you that saying the name of the song in the hook isn't necessary

eg

Speed Laws
Stan
Guilty Conscience
Role Model

to name a couple

therefore get your facts straight
