The beef started when Jermaine Dupri (JD), So So Def founder and CEO, complained in the November 2001 issue of XXL Magazine that he was not considered a great producer like Dr Dre and Timbaland. The article quotes Jermaine saying:
"I call myself that [Don Ciccio] to let niggas know, I will take you out...that's my mentality musicwise, whether it be Puff [or] anybody that people wanna call my competition, I will take 'em out. Hands down, ain't nobody in the industry that can do what I do. Not Dre, not Timbaland, not nobody"

Dre told MTV News in April 2002 that he and Timbaland were so heated that they contemplated collaborating on a dis song aimed at Dupri called "Papa Smurf." On "Say What You Say" the B-Side to Eminem's new track "Without Me", from "The Eminem Show", Dre Dre refers to Dupri as a "Mini-Me" who runs around with several smaller versions of himself.
Dr Dre raps:
"Creep wit me, as we take a lil' trip down memory lane
Been here longer than anyone in the game
And I ain't got to lie about my age (But what about Jermaine?)
F**k Jermaine!
He don't belong speakin mine or Timbaland's name
And don't think, I don't read
your lil' interviews, and see what you're sayin
I'm a giant, and I ain't gotta move 'til I'm provoked
When I see you I'ma step on you and not even know it
You midget, Mini-Me with a bunch of little Mini-Yous
runnin around your backyard swimmin pools
Over 80 million records sold
And I ain't have to do it with ten or eleven-year-olds"

A week after "Say What You Say" was leaked onto the Internet (05.05.02), Dupri responded with a track called "Jackin' Beats". The track does exactly what it says, stealing beats from Dre's "Next Episode", Mary J's "Family Affair" and two of Timbaland's tracks.
Jermaine Dupri Raps:
"Should've never f**ked with College Park,
You little gay ass mark
All you can say about me is that I'm short
But my dough is long,
Dr. Dre, mother f**ker, come on"

The track is weak compared to Dre's diss. Dupri says "I know you don't do half the work in the studio, plus your little niggas play with your booty hole". He intentionally leaves Eminem out, until the end that is, when he raps "Eminem, I left you out deliberately, you know why? To me you're like a character in Disney World, known for dissin' pop groups and Justin's ex-girl, shit, ain't no one take you seriously."

Two days later (07.05.02) Dupri told Feli Fel, "Like I told them in the interview [XXL November, 2001], the part that you left out is that I love all they music, that was my final statement. I said I love all of these guys, but I feel like I'm the best in the field of what I do right now. If that is a dis, I guess...I don't know what dissin' is. I wasn't really angry at them or nothing...but they took it to somewhere I didn't even know it was going to go to...to me it's a friendly battle, and I hope it stays that way". Now that's what I call backing down.

On the new DJ Kay Slay mixtape, Eminem indicates that more Dupri disses are on the way, saying, "I stay beefin' with JD 'til the day Dre 2ways me/ That it's OK to stop blazin' him," ending by calling Dupri a "gay midget." Then Xzibit calls out JD in a freestyle over The Clipse "Grindin" instrumental (22.05.02). Xzibit raps:
"If you're So So Def, then b*tch get a hearing aid
Ain't worth the gauge, you're heart pumpin' lemonade
Hook line and sinker you took the bait
Act your age, not your size, not your weight
Every time you profess you makin' hits
Why you always got to sound like the next man's sh*t?
Went from Big, to Puff, to Snoop to Jay
Hey Jermaine, who's d*ck are you gonna ride today?
Couldn't wait to get the green light from Dr. Dre

If that wasn't enough, Dupris protégé Lil Bow Wow has now thown in his two cents too! On Hot 97 he disses Dre, Eminem and Xzibit in a freestyle (03.06.02)
Lil Bow Wow raps:
"This ain't 'Dre Day' & homie you was never raw
Remember the picture of you with lip gloss on, well you look like the hoodrats I meet bakstage on tour"
and
"What'z cuz? what'z up with the lex & o's?
