Buy an external harddrive

and back up your files.

My Hard drive crashed the other night, it was 250 GB, holding over 4 years of information, rap songs, things I've recorded, stories I've written, and it's so fucking fried that I have to attempt to enslave it to my newest 500 GB Hard Drive, if it's not cooked to the point of retardation.

Hopefully I can recover it and use it to back up my newest hard drive's files, but it doesn't look too hopeful in all honesty. It may not seem like I've been gone for long, that's because I run more than one computer on my at-home network and I had a copy of Vista laying around.

Don't give me the mac virus bullshit, all hard drives fry, even on Macs. I like Linux.

Yeah I know this thread is nerdy, but whatev. Back up your files or live in regret if you're not handy with computers, if you are, you may just be able to save yourself when (it's pretty much just a matter of time) your shit fails.

I have to find tweezers and pull a plastic jumper off of my new hard drive and throw it in place on the old one to jumper it and make it the slave so that I can access all the old memory off of it.

Thank God I didn't have to pay some geeky bitch at the store money to diagnose my situation over, and over again.

Lol.

My bad it doesn't have to be external. It's just kinda doper in my opinion to throw all your files on a hard drive and kind of store it in the back of your closet for safe keeping.

However I have two internal hard drives now. Fuck how I hope the old one's not fried, I need my old shit, and having 750 GB worth of memory would be cool. Of course it would require me to update my RAM sometime soon if I want to count on the ability to use all of the memory without slowing my computer down a lot. :|

Nice Hard Drive - Over $100.00
Any windows OS - Over $100.00

This happened to me about a month ago too. Luckily I'd backed up all my tracks about 8 months ago, so I didn't lose a lot of that, as I hadn't done a lot since then. I lost all my TV shows, all my films, all my albums, all my instrumentals, all my game saves and all my porn though. Fuckin annoying. It just feels weird being on this pretty much blank hard drive without my stuff, I'm still mourning for my data and I haven't got over it yet lmfao. I'm still trying to recover it though.

I've fuckin tried every recovery program I can find, but none of them work. I have this problem where it scans it and then the drive just disappears. I have no idea why it's so massively corrupted, but for whatever reason it is. On one of these programs it let me see the root directory though, and on that I could see all the folders on my C: drive, I couldn't go into them, but they're still there, whether or not what's in them is still there and useable I don't know. But it's still given me some hope.

Seein as how you use Linux, you might have heard of Knoppix. It's meant to be fuckin good to recover stuff. I've tried the same thing as you, putting the drive as a slave to my new one, and I got Knoppix started once with it. I tried it again though and it didn't like it for certain reasons.

So what I'm gonna do is buy a hard drive enclosure, put my old hard drive in it, hook it up with USB, and then try using Knoppix to recover it, and transfer the files to my new hard drive. After that's done, and it IS going to work (positive thinking), then I'll format the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive for back up's.

Here's a link to the Knoppix site:

I downloaded the CD version via torrent here:

The bottom one is the one I got.

My stuff is already backed up on an external harddrive.

I didn't check out knoppix but I'll tell you now that if your old hard drive crashed because of a virus and didn't just flat out fail, any program that recovers 100% of your files without choice (such as slave and master lets you do) could revive that same virus on your new hard drive..so be careful with how you approach retrieving your data unless you're sure without a doubt that your hard drive just failed due to old age.

Word to backing up your stuff... I need to do that with my movies / tv shows drive, but I usually prefer putting it on dvdr after I watch them first... problem is I download faster than I can watch them. If that drive ever goes bad, I'd be so pissed. On the other hand, hard drives are so cheap nowadays.. a 1 TB drive is going for around $110 now.

That's what happened with me, I just had too many movies/albums/tv shows and it would have taken a loooot of discs to back it all up, and at the time I didn't have any discs. Now I'm sorry :( Ah, I really hope I can get my stuff back.

If not then at least now I'll have an external hard drive to use for back up's.

that's probably the best price I've ever heard of.

I payed $130 for 500 GB.

Knoppix rules.

I've managed to recover quite a lot of my data so far, including all my audio tracks, audio verses and text verses. As well as 4 season's of Lost, 2 season's of Dexter and 2 season's of Heroes among other stuff.

It's quite a slow process because if a file is corrupt then it stalls for a while, and I can't even get any of my albums because the folder's so big. So I'm gonna need to actually try and sort the problem out if I want those back.

But yea, I've managed to get back all the data that can't be replaced, so I'm happy :)
