mom and pop shops will usually buy small amounts and then try to recoup the money from off the shelves.... there are a few chain retail spots that deal with local artists too (usually have a seperate section displayed with local artists) so give them a shout to see if they can help and find out what the process is.
That's how my old DJ got his start... selling mixtapes to record stores... he's now an international DJ out of NY and has worked for numerous major radio stations and worked with anumber of artists (gooogle DJ Spinbad and you'll see what I'm talking about.... most bootlegged mixtape ever!) |
good shit,thx for the input.

Yeah, that's your best start. Find a locally owned shop thats willing to purchase a smaller amount. If they do well, they'll buy more and you have stats to show other stores. If you want to get in on a big chain, you most likely need one of two things: lots of money, or a distribution deal, both obviously being hard to come by.
But hey, anybody can get their music up on iTunes now. That's where the industry is going, I'd suggest taking advantage of that. |

actually, how would u get a distrubution deal? is that like a record deal?

Yep, it's essentially a record deal. Most big companies have either distribution branches, or partner companies that handle that area. A lot of indie companies just do the distribution on their own, which can prove to be pricey. You can get a distribution deal without getting a record deal though. You'd have to finish recording your album then "sell" it to a record label, who in turn distributes it. It's becoming more and more common as a way to cut costs and give a potential artist a "trial run" so to speak, but it's definitely not easy to get by any means. They're out there if your music is on point, just look. |
good shit
