you're not the best untill...

... you've conquered bob dylan.

Depends on the era. Other than his last 3 releases he's been shit since 1975. Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen destroy Dylan on a lyrical level.

M&rk 09-13-10 04:02 PM

i don't know if i know leonard cohen, but with the understanding bob has about what he's about; he can't do wrong by me no matter the era. to say that is to dislike yourself

oh, yeah well, anyone of those few first beat movement creators are amazing, but all pulling from the same energy along with bob. but bob's still the best in my eyes because he's had to deal with the most popularity.

Adam 09-13-10 05:09 PM

Dealing with popularity has nothing to do with your ability to come at a constant level of excellence when it comes to writing. Dylan wanted to be popular and noticed, the guy was full of himself. Christ, he's still doing advertisements for car companies. Dylan was good in the mid 60's 'til the mid 70's and he fell off drastically, especially with albums like "Saved". His Christian period was awful, musically and lyrically, even the performances lacked any type of soul.

Tom Waits is EASILY the best song writer out there. In a time period where double LP's are a big deal.. he releases a 7 LP, 56 song album as his 20th studio production. He's been covered by the likes of Bruce Springsteen and The Eagles (to name a couple) and has won multiple awards and starred in many movies. Doing this well keeping it real and out of the spotlight.

converstations on this site always turn to confrintations because everyone thinks they know more than the next person a feel the need to prove that. you always have to fight you're way through the bull shit.
..
for some people its slower than others most never make it through

Adam 09-13-10 09:27 PM

I'm just setting somebody straight who thinks Bob Dylan is the be all and end all of writing. The guy was a song writer that wanted to be called a poet. The guy would have killed to be a Beatnik, but could never compared to Ginsberg, Burroughs, Kerouac or Corso. Yeah he wrote some fantastic songs, some of my favourites, but he was really all just in good timing. He put on the worst concert that I've ever gone to. He doesn't care about what he does or how he sounds and I've lost ample amounts of respect for him.

Go read some Bukowski or put on a Pink Floyd record.

JTR 09-13-10 11:57 PM

yeaaa oookkkkkk bro! try going to a metallica concert when they came out with that St. Anger bullshit.

Tic Tic GARBAGE

that shit was pretty much saying "all we care about is money not our music, performance or fans anymore cuz we already made it so fuck you"

what a slap in the face that concert was

M&rk 09-14-10 01:06 AM

bukowski is dope, but tom waits is just a good actor. Pink floyd aint shit with out their lunitic lead singer that is gone in never never land, but he's dope and mostly just from being able to handle lsd correctly like the few really good musicians. FUCK MATALLICA! irrelivent to this conversation. and about the beatniks, i'm pretty sure they had a lot of respect for bob dylan, he gave them a face and expanded the teachings to the next generation of hippies to yippies to reality fakers to the few that still want to make a difference. bob's the biggest form of introduction to all of what the beatniks were about. thats atleast how i got introduced to that whole movement and i can imagine many more who'd do the same.

Adam 09-14-10 05:20 AM

Tom Waits is just a good actor? That statement alone is enough for me to not read anything else you write on this forum.

M&rk 09-14-10 06:35 PM

his singing voice is just crazy and for me, not in a good way, but i like his acting. i'm sure he's a good musician too, but i don't like him as one.

Adam 09-14-10 06:52 PM

I'm assuming you just youtubed the first videos that came up? I guarantee you haven't listened to anything off "Closing Time" or "The Heart Of Saturday Night".

Adam 09-14-10 08:41 PM

It's better than getting stoned to a guy rhyming Tornado with Volcano and having Rihanna do a one take of a hook and pay her a shit ton of money to help get him noticed again. Oh, and to top it off, get Megan Fox to star in the video... Desperate? Just a little.
