I'm Confused...DJ/Producer
Up until recently I always assumed a DJ was the producer of an album. Eric B. and Rakim, Fresh Prince, GanggStar etc.
But I was told that they are not one in the same. Can someone explain what exactly the difference is... |
Dj just makes the beats..and promotes..
|
^ not really.... a producer is like Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kayne West, Just Blaze, Necro etc.... they just use a Drum Machine and those other electrical gadgets to make beats.... DJ's are the people on the turntables who spin disc's and scratch etc...
The difference is, since DJing is far harder than simply being a producer, most DJ's can produce and work the turntables... so that explains why you see something like "produced by DJ Premier".. he's a DJ that also produces... but you'll never see "produced by DJ Dr. Dre" cos dre just produces, no DJing... also notice that 95% when a DJ is producing, scratches are worked into the beat... especially true with DJ Quik and Premier... hope that helped |
dr. dre make beats..
|
^ i know... but he doesnt DJ.....
|
am i correct in thinking that if DJ TR didnt scratch on any song, then while the album is being recorded he is on his just sitting back and scratching his ass??
|
^ no, but DJ's usually scratch whilst producing... if you've got the skills, why not implement it... im not saying ALL of them do, but alot do... i know if i was able to scratch, i'd use it in my songs
|
and for the record Dre used to DJ...before NWA days..

A Producer Only Makes Beats...
But A DJ Produces And Scratches Also...And Sometimes, He Puts Scratches On His Beats...A La Primo...! |
and for the record Dre used to DJ...before NWA days..
^ i was refering to present day, G-Funk dre |
You can also scratch a beat.. Juggle it.. Whatever..
D-styles - Phantazmagore is an example of an album completely made on the wheels o' steel. You don't have to produce if you're a Dj.. How many tracks do you see Q-bert producing? Watch the scratch documentary before you speak on Dj'ing.. Not one person on this site (except maybe Nec because he's just knowledgeable in everything) would know the slightest thing about the culture.. We don't just spin discs and scratch.. There's far more to it.. |
More n more commercial rap beats r produced entirely using computers. There are still sum beat makers out there (xcutioners) who r making beats purely using turntables but they r becoming fewer and fewer. Nowadays Scratches r added in a seperate track the same as other instruments but just make up a small part of the entire beat. Name any major producer, they all work mostly on computers. That's just where the industry is going because of record companies demanding a higher level of sound quality from rap producers.
