LA Riots '92

Late last night, flicking through some channels, found good 'ol Reality TV.
The program was just a helicopter aerial footage thing.. shows 1hr of helicopter footage, but it was footage of the Riots.
Now I was bout 8 at the time, so I didn't know bout it then... plus the fact that I'm from the Uk.. not much heard.
I knew bout it a while back.. the whole Rodney King shit etc.. the guy getting caned after being dragged from his truck, but never saw any footage.

A whole hour of it last night... real smart.
The two unfortunate guys that got caned.... damn... thats all I can say.

Can anyone remember it happening at the time.. or were any of you actually there in the thick of it? esp. on Florence n ??? intersection...

??

I was right smack in the middle of the shit. I still have a TV at my moms house looted in that riot. I was always hanging out wiht older cousins who at the time thought it would be fun to go and loot. Loot we did, our house was the party central for a long time after. we looted so much alcohol, I mean the store clerk was handing us bags as we went in, al he did was tell us not to burn the structure down. Gun stores, and many electronic stores in hunting park were among our targets. I feel stupid about it now, but that ws a very long time ago, and I did suffer a nasty gash across the whole of my chest jumping thru some cracked windows. It was such a forign sight, national gaURD WAS EVERY WHERE. I grew up in the ghetto's of LA, so I seen this first hand. We toured the area durring the first hours of the riot, until curfews were put into place. Then we just lurked around in the shadows running from the ligts of cars, as the gaurd would ruff you up if caught out after dark. It was crazy as shit during that time. Kind of reminded me of that movie Red dawn. Just my thoguhts on this subject, but yeah I was there and remember it well. Remember I am older than most on this site...

I remember watching it and thinking 'damn damn damn' i was at a mostly white school back then and i heard somebody say 'and thats what happens when you upset those kinds of people' for about 2 months after that i was the 'why did they loot' guy shit pissed me off,,, ecspecially since i was all the way in VA and couldn't get nothing!!!

Lol yeah... woulda been nice to be there... but being black woulda helped slightly..
Tho' I still think it was right, I couldn't help but feel gutted for those two guys... I mean shit... they were fucked up.. woke up.. got on his knees.. hand up looking for help.. along comes some guy and kicks him in the face.. then robs him..
Wrong time.. wrong place..
I found it smart that police were told to stay outta that certain area..
They woulda been caned badly..

Most...

But I ain't most.

I wasn't there like Bounce, but I, we, everyone with common sense knew what was coming.

Glued to the fucking TV...

I had the day off, so it was uninteruppted drama.

When the news announced that those cops had been found NOT guilty...

Man...

There was so much silence.

Cuz you knew it was the clam before the storm.

Peeps in disbelief.

Then anger.

Then rage.

Granted, we didn't have riots in Houston.

But there were more than plenty of pissed off brothers...

I don't agree with the actions and everything that ensued.

But I can't help be glad because it changed our country.

I don't think at anytime before that...

Did the President of the fucking United States step in and say...

"No...that verdict is wrong, they need to be punished"

That was dope.

That was his way of saying, "We're sorry" to the black community.

Maybe they didn't get locked up for long, I can't remember.

But they were locked up over the shit...

At least 2 of em.

Very cool message...

Despite the fact that lots of motherfuckers with authority have forgotten it.

Peace
