Scented Candles
The wick is struck, and the flame begins to flicker
As the time grows closer, my heart beats quicker The scent of love begins to consume the room Tonight I will ask her for our flower to bloom I have contemplated and debated asking the question Now I sit, with the engagement ring in my possession The romantic dinner stage is set, with the magic ready to begin She hasn’t arrived, and I’ve already got goose bumps on my skin The doorbell rings and my hands start to quiver Sweat is flowing from my skin faster then a river I look at her, with a smile that quickly disappears She stares at the ground, her eyes filled with tears I ask her what’s wrong and to look me in the eye She continues to cry, and confesses there’s another guy She can no longer go on, and brings an end To our relationship, and I still can’t comprehend Three years with her has come to a fatal finish She turns away, and my soul starts to diminish I stare out the door for an hour with the same blank expression Realize she’s not coming back, but still hold the ring in possession I sit at the table where the flame still flickers and preys On the candles wax and staring at it sets my heart ablaze The flame has burnt out for me, and soon will for this flame I see that my relationship with her and this candle are the same Our wax was melted to the end, and the flame’s flicker died The scent of love fills the air, but it floats next to my side Not touching me, as I sit in the darkness and the flame consumes The last bit of wax and the flicker dies down, darkening the rooms |
