First Time I picked up a Mic

Opened the door with moist palms, a drop of sweat on my
brow
Pressured into a performance…and I know just how
My girl read one of my poems, said she loved spoken word
Said she was gonna sign me up for open mic on the third
I reluctantly agreed couldn’t tell my girl no
So the very next week I found myself at the show
In a plush black recliner I sat with doubt in my head
So much fear in my heart I wished that I would drop dead
A mellow aura filled the room and then the stage went black
A beaming spotlight shone above and the DJ spun a track
Now the tension floats away I feel more and more relaxed
A woman steps up to the mic and tha DJ turns down tha wax
In sultry sexy voice this vixen announced I was next
I rose to my feet………. butterflies rose to my chest
Each step echoed in my mind as if I had an amp in my brain
But I knew if I wanted pleasure tonight…I’d have to go thru tha pain
“Check one…check two…check one…check two”
“Please have an open mind…I’ve never done this I’m new”
Gripped tha pale gray mic and pushed tha chord to tha back
Remember wishing I was Jigga so I could fade to black
A shimmering silver head…no foam mic cover
Cleared my throat and commenced to spit a poem about my lover
I fell in love with the mic, how is that for a scene
Now I understand the meaning of a microphone fiend
