VERNON — The owners of a German shepherd puppy contacted Vernon Police and the state Division of Fish and Wildlife to report a weekend bear attack on their dog in Highlands Lakes. It was the second such Sunday attack that claimed a Highland Lakes dog's life in as many weeks.

The German shepherd's owners reported to Vernon Police at 11:45 a.m. that the dog's back was broken by a female bear accompanied by two cubs. The owners later told police the dog had to be put down.

State biologists believe the bear is the same one that killed "Freddie," a miniature schnauzer killed May 15 on Lakeside Drive West, said Karen Hershey, spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Protection. A trap has been set to capture the bear, she said.

"We are issuing an advisory to residents of Highland Lakes that they should not leave their dogs outside unattended," Vernon Police Chief Roy Wherry said, adding that the owners were present in both Highlands Lakes attacks this month.

Tennis season in jeopardy

SPARTA — The Sussex County Technical School's varsity girls tennis team may not be able to play on its home court this fall.

Coach Charlene Koegel told the school's Board of Education on Monday that the courts need to be refurbished to meet league standards, but board members said they may not have the $13,000-$16,000 to pay for the work. Funds for the work were cut from next year's budget, board members said. The district faces a $200,000 shortfall after the board cut $500,000 from the budget last month.

"We'll see what we can do, that's all I can say now," board President Gary Sargent said. "This is the first time I'm hearing about this."

Koegel said the team could likely play at the Sparta Athletic Club, but that would cost almost as much to rent for the season.

School officials said they may look into whether the team could play at Pope John XXIII Regional High School as the school had previously used the technical school's facility.

MONTAGUE — MARCH, Montague's Historical Society, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Foster-Armstrong house, 320 River Road in Montague. Kenneth Zuber will be the guest speaker.

While Zuber was a teenager, his family bought and operated the 206-acre Bennefill Farm, on which a two-story Greek Revival house remains, though now it is within the National Recreation Area. The dairy farm was located on Old Mine Road, near Jager Road in Sandyston.

Zuber worked the farm during the summers and will show slides of it taken while it was active and when there were dairy farms all along Old Mine Road. All are welcome.

Refreshments will be served before the presentation. Doors open at 7 p.m. Officers and members are asked to attend an executive board meeting at 6 p.m.

Kindergarten orientation set

STILLWATER — Stillwater Township School, on Stillwater Road, will be holding kindergarten orientation day from 9:15 to 10:55 a.m. on June 1.

Both the parents and new pupils are requested to attend.
