candy coated emotions...
 

my eyes find the morning sunrise and
i wince at the flash that burns my retinas…
its so bright for being 7:32 in the AM!
my body materializes from the nothingness of
this perfectly white comforter,
but the ease that was in my bones soon
leaves and i find myself standing naked of armor,
waiting for the day to land on me
like wicked witches in Oz…
stepping from beneath the veil of
her cries, i slip into the teeming stream
that empties from hallway to sidewalk,
finally rid of the safety of that building.
sitting on the stoop outside,
stairs reminding me of the climb to her lips,
i find myself daydreaming about the
first kiss we shared, the first night.
she cried then too!
seems like her fudge sundae mouth
and candy coated eyes gave way to the
tears flowing of caramel.
once again, I find myself digging into
my pocket searching for my
last package of rolos…
in her memory!
its 8:11 now, im still here,
outside the residence hall while
she sleeps soundly inside…
those tears covered her over last night,
hardening and keeping her safe as she slept.
its 8:12.
im wondering how the sun’s
morning smile gave way to the rain’s
mid-morning assault on my thoughts.
i open my mouth and taste the air
with my trembling tongue…
instead of caramel i taste vanilla,
God must be crying for me again…
i can tell the day is going to get better
because i hear her sobs subsiding
as i walk back into confinement.
