50 Cent Takes Home 6 Billboard Awards
The Vegas lights were shining on hip hop rap artist 50 Cent last night as he picked up six awards at the 2005 Billboard Music Awards, making him the big winner of the evening.
50 had led the pack of nominees with eight mentions, and took home trophies for Artist of the Year, Album of the Year (The Massacre), R&B/Hip Hop Artist, Rap Artist, Hot 100 Artist, and Ringtone of the Year ("Candy Shop") at the ceremony broadcast live from Vegas' MGM Grand Garden Arena. LL Cool J, who hosted the show, called 50 Cent - who was in Paris and couldn't make it to the show - to let him know which awards he had won, according to Billboard.com.
Comment Mariah Carey came in close behind 50 with five awards: Billboard 200 Album Artist, Female R&B/Hip Hop Artist of the Year, and Hot 100 Song, Hot 100 Airplay of the Year, and Rhythmic Top 40 for "We Belong Together."
Modesty was lost on Kanye West as he came up to accept his Artist Achievement Award. "When I first came out I was a hot head," he said. "I thought I was the greatest. I still think I'm the greatest."
Other artists who might have reason to think they are the greatest included Shakira, who took home three trophies including Latin Pop Album Artist of the Year, and Gwen Stefani who won for New Artist of the Year. Stefani was also honored with Digital Song of the Year for "Hollaback Girl," and asked collaborator Pharrell to come up on stage and accept the award with her.
Daddy Yankee, who also performed at the show, won two awards including Latin Album of the Year for Barrio Fino, while Mario similarly took home a pair of trophies, including one for R&B/Hip Hop song of the Year for "Let Me Love You."
