The difference is a lot of underground heads actually make raps that stay true to how hip hop should be by keeping the shit strictly about the lyrics.. Hip hop IS about lyrics, no matter what some morons try to tell you.. The beats and hooks are just tools to sell your lyrics...

Underground heads problem with mainstream heads are a mixture of having no respect for their petty little gay attempts at writing lyrics.... And jeolousy for the fact that these guys are selling so much more & living in the spotlight for their sub-par talent lacking music that doesent keep it real at all..

At the end of the day... The most successful artists are always the ones that create a style thats a mixture of both..........*shrugs*

I listen to Dre and underground, if mainstream is good, ill listen to it...im not the type to say only underground only underground, cuz i do listen to eminem and nas well eminem when he was good, as long as its good ill listen to it, but mainstream today just isnt good straight up, like nos said it is about lyrics, if 2 people are talking about 1 subject, and 1 person says it in a more intriguing way with wordplay and shit i'd rather listen to him cuz i like thinking about what the person says rather then them just flat out saying it which is what everyone in mainstream is doing today and everything is just royally fucked, yea you can make money off this as a profession, but that shouldnt be the ONLY thing on peoples minds, if a 50 cent verse intrigues you more then a canibus verse or chino xl or eminem etc., then you have problems and your mind is too simple, and thats what i think, if you dont know what the word theyre saying means then look it up and stop being lazy, you expand your vocabulary and the line might actually be fuckin genius if you know what that word means and can put it together.

I like Mainstream better but I think Underground is known for better lyrics.

and to answer the thread title i think its better cuz it actually stimulates my mind, im not one that goes to clubs and parties and shit so obviously im not gonna be listenin to 50 type music, i like shit that you could really think about and hits you hard either personally or another level that gives you a higher respect for that artist.

I don't have to pull out a dictionary cuz I understand what they're saying. Most of mainstream doesn't appeal to me just because the intelligence isn't at my level, and I want to feel like I can connect to the people, and the only way I can is if I can see their intelligence in their lyrics. If I'm hearing some hood/good or blue/shoe stuff, I can't really connect.

Some mainstream I like, but honestly I like intelligence, and that shows more in Underground then it does in mainstream.

But I don't necessarily think underground is better. I just like good music, and a good portion of that happens to be underground. I don't really like hearing the same stuff over and over, so that's one of the reasons I don't like a lot of commercial rappers.

The key is life. Alot of people are just unrealistic to me. It's entertaining for a while but 90% of these rappers are Gangstalicious (boondocks) renting a jet they don't own talking bout squeezing triggers when they're squeezing themselves and the cars and....that shit get old. The underground rappers actually have to make it so they have to be the best through any means which is normally just being the better lyricist. Half the fun for me is going damn that was complex but that's not for most. The more intellectual rappers feel the more intellectual rhymes and complexity but if you just want to bounce to a good beat then you can listen to anything.



and no 50 cent isn't better than half the cats on this site, he's actually about at their level
