Funny...most people probably consider themselves "lyricists". But, the definition of the word means "someone who writes song lyrics". Therefore, anyone who isn't a biter is a lyricist.

As for increasing vocab, you have to read bro. You have to not only read, but expose yourself to as much as possible. That could be in the form of print, visual media, music, and dialogue. Being able to use obscure references and vocab in your writing is made possible by increasing your knowledge of things/facts/people/places/events.

So, I would suggest reading as much as possible.

Use synonyms more often. Don't just use the word that comes to mind use substitutes for it. After a while you'll be able to make ANY word fit what you're trying to say.

Do you mean like this?

Utilize synonyms more frequently. Don't just use the word that comes to mind, use substitutes for it. After a while, you'll be able to coerce ANY word to fit what you're attempting to articulate.

 Agreed...But, even with that, remember to remember the music of your verse. In other words, just because a word fits, doesn't mean it sounds right musically.

Just spend ages on each line..

Be creative... Get inspired about the sequence of words your building as opposed to just trying to throw off some played ass every day words...

And smoke weed when you write ya lyrics...
Shits dope for making you concentrate real hard on ya writing.. You'll be suprised by how much it actually gets you right immersed into the words your writing instead of just tacking the subject you've set out to tackle.

best way to increase vocab is to read

Why not?

smoke?...why would you encourage drug use as a part of creativity?
to each their own I suppose

use synonyms and read, what everyone ele pretty much said...it takes time to develop more complex tracks because it takes time to develop complex thoughts...read about different things, history, music, politics, whatever interests you...incorporate it into your lyrics, the more you read the easier it will become...just open yourself up to more possibilities as far as topics

It does work, and I do use it for that purpose sometimes, but it's not my favorite way to write. But man, it helps me breathe so much easier...good trick for recording.

reading's what worked for me. Your dialogue is directily proportoinal to your knowledge.

All this reading bullshit. Rap lyrics are supposed to be how you feel. What you go through. What you seen and done in life. By saying, "oh, read more..." that just trying to be something that you're not, especially if you're not a reader. Reading is all good, but that's not the key to better lyrics. I would say the most simple shit, and probably the most meaningful and helpful shit in this thread...just stay in school. If you learn new words and vocab and shit like that...you can use better wordage and don't have to be the average nursery rhymer. But alway stay true with your lyrics. If you're writing lyrics, and got a dictionary right next to you...UR A BUST!!

Sorry to tell you, but educating your self is NOT making you into something you're not.

Unless you consider your self uneducated.
