In this book I read it suggested 5 thousand dollars at least.

That includes the basic lawyer fees for documents, etc.

doesnt realy cost a thing. You can have it registered as A buisness for free.

The cost's come into play when you want to actually record.
you wil need good enough recording gear.
computer 2000
mic roughly 100-300 dollers
pre amps.
mic cable.

then you need to put out your first mixtape that looks decent enough to claim its under a label.
so you will need.
Enough CD cases and CD's to get the word out there that your a label.
roughly 500-1000
you will need advertising. Price will vary depending on how dedicated you are.
You may need to rent someone small to do a live show of some sort.

It all depends on how far your wanting to take it, and what angle your going with it.

you can easily grab a mic computer record a track and say " this is is my label called "donuts productions" first single.

thats still legit to call it a label. But its a worthless label with no money backing you and no one on it but you.

are u shure ................

Ysdat 05-02-06 05:05 PM

yes.

A label can be just like a crew of emcee's. A underground label is just that, Underground not much funding tryna set there label up of funding from first album's,maybe have a part time job to help fund it on the side.
You dont need lawyers and courts to start yoru own label.
you just simply do it.

i just thought it would be a good idea to get a deal for 1-2 albums
then u haver large audience then if u own your label fans that bought your 1,or 2 albums would keep buying from u and it wouldnt matter cause you get 100% of the profit

what would a label that can distribute cds to stores like target and best buy cost im just curious

you need to proberly do alot more reaserch into this.
I am in the process of starting my own label, have been looking into it for months now.
I met with a guy last night from sony, (signed to sony) and he gave me alot of good tips and shit that only a industry cat would know, and most the time alot wouldnt be willing to tell.

Releasing your own music on CD means that, for all intents and purposes, you've become your own record label, even if you didn't go about the administrative tasks of setting up a separate company. A record label is in the business of releasing records; since you've done that or plan to do it very shortly, you are already performing the job of a record label. It makes sense to take a few simple, additional steps to formalize what you are doing under the business title of Record Label.

Theres many things you need to do along the way, but obviously you have to keep it too your budget. money is the key here.
but you can start it with nothing, i have.

Somewere along the road you will need to register your label's name, in doing this you will go to license with the secretary of state or registrar of deeds in your home state.Ask to file a ficticious name statment.
This will some what copy write your labels name and also make sure the label name your stating isnt allready taken, or someone has a name close to it and could lead to legal issues down the line.

But basically for now bro, the more money you have the better. The more your labels known the better.

So my advice is, if your dedicated, save every doller towards it. Start promoting it put out a few singles to hand out for free in your local and tell them that this si the music your making on yoru label.

just try bro, you dont need much money to set things off with.

nothing.

you don't need a label to get your music into the major stores like the ones you mentioned.

only need a Distribuion deal. Distribution companies put your CD's in the stores - just like they do for the labels.

a "label" is nothing more than someoen who gets your songs recorded. Publishing is your advertising (videos, commerials, radio, tv etc) and Distrobution is pretty self explainatory.

read a thread in the LL called "why do you want to get signed". it sounds like it'll be a HUGE help to you right about now.

Ysdat 05-02-06 05:29 PM

Ever since my talk with the cat from sony, the words distrbution deal sound so much sexier than record deal.

thanks i just dont want to stop being ignorant towards this issue

Sean Gunner 05-02-06 05:51 PM

You need respect as well, or else people won't sign with you.

Ysdat 05-02-06 05:58 PM

^ that obviously comes with your managment skill. respect plays a part but i dont feel its highly signifigant.
