They didn't get mad when P. Diddy came out of nowhere and performed in the middle of the street.

Because P. Diddy appeals to the man.

But P.Diddy was also performing at the VMAs. If MTV took credit for him being there them their permit carries over to him, thus allowing him to perform. Since Mos Def wasn't allowed to perform at the Awards, then he'd need his own permit to play in the street. Since MTV didn't want him performing they could deny him coverage under their permit, and since he didn't have his own he was arrested. Christ I hate when people (Blacks in particular) blame cops for being racist when a black person doesn't think before acting. If mos wanted to perform nationally make a video and go to 106 and Park. It'd get played at least once. Oh yeah, I am black so i'm not a racist. I'm a fuckin realist. I see what Mos was saying and agree, but you gotta spread to word in a way that they can't deny you. It was stupid on his part. Hell if anything he could have had a 'mainstream' song for MTV, told them, then switched last minute. Now stop saying the song got him arrested, his own brashness did.
