Burning 500 CDs
isnt fun.
Being a independant label and cutting back on budget by burning all our CDs ourselves. isnt fun. yeh... |
It costs more to do that...
Unless you stole all 500. |

So 500 CDs would cost you approx. $1000. Now that includes cases, inserts, CDs, and thermal color printing. Even assuming you bought the CDs in bulk, you still don't have half the stuff they do. |
500 CDs including printing of covers is costing me just under $200.
Compnays here dont do small runs of 500. They do it in thousands @ $2.50 per CD. And Ike, we obviously done our research before doing it this way, we wouldnt just assume this was cheaper. |

I've done some research on this and if you are doing a lot of the things yourself, it is pretty cheap. If you shop around, you should be able to get CDRs for around 10c a piece. I loaded up on HP brand cdrs from an online deal for 600 for less than $50. For cd cases, the best deal I've found were for the slim cd cases from Microcenter at 100 for $10. The plastic sleeves I sent the RV mixtapes in were also from Microcenter and were like $5 for 100. The sleeves were lighter so it cost less to mail since postage is pretty expensive. If you are a label, the slim cd cases would be a better choice since you can put in an insert. Only downside for the slim cases is you can't put in the tray cards. The cheapest place I've found for full color printing for the cd inserts is at hotcards.com. 1000 pieces for $113 before shipping.. It is $175 if you go with cd inserts and tray cards. If you have a color printer, you can also cut some costs by printing your own cd labels. I bought mine from onlinelabels.com
Burning the cdrs do take a while. I usually burn mine at around 20x to reduce the chances of coasters/errors so it takes about 5 minutes each. I just pop in a cd and go watch tv and come back during the commercials to switch in another disc. |
^yeh, we ended up getting our CD's for roughly 3cents each. Doing it yourself is a shitload cheaper than getting a company. Even though they look more preffesional, when its a mixtape who gives a fuck about the
look" being perfect, its the music that should make the mixtape dope. |
