Why is it that most people don't know...
 

That it doesn't matter if you're actually the "best" at something, it only matters if you're PERCEIVED as "the best" or "one of the best" at something?


I'm talking about this never-ending debate of: Who is the best rapper? ...either on this site or in the industry. Who cares? Let the critics debate that...but it truly is a MOOT point.

Truth is...something or someone only has to be DECENT to GOOD to be successful...the rest is all about IMAGE...how they convince people to "buy into" their brand.

If the goal of a rapper is to sell records, they can be an average rapper but tap into the appeal of the masses...This equates to success for that particular rapper...

It's all relative...But, the jealousy and envy of others won't allow them to see that. If a rapper only wants to get his music out into the airwaves, just to be an inspiration to someone, then they could do that but remain "underground." If that rapper doesn't sell well, then he is perceived to be less successful that the rapper in the previous example. That would be an incorrect assessment. Success is defined by the person whom achieves it. The fact of the matter is, the slow-selling rapper in the second example could technically be a "better" rapper than the former. But, because his brand image doesn't equate to units sold, he's deemed second tier. It's all in what people prioritize.

I can honestly say that I and many people on this and other web sites are technically BETTER rappers than many who are platinum selling artists. But, what's the point of arguing that? That's just like someone who can make a better hamburger than Macdonald's arguing, "I'm better than Mickey D's." The question then becomes, "...But, are you more successful than they are?"....

...It wouldn't matter if the person who made the better burger didn't COMPARE himself to Macdonald's...He'd be satisfied with what he's doing...But, since he did, he comes up short in the "success" race...

Macdonald's, selling AVERAGE BURGERS, is probably more successful than EVERYONE else who can make burgers 10x better.
