Could you expect less from China?
.... China is a country that is FULL of pride. They love their history, and their history is so incredibly extensive that it's even unknown to THEM.
They were one of the best countries in the world a long time ago because a majority of them believed China was the entire world. So they built a great wall, and had around 42 cities built within their country to battle with other nearby cities and gain dominance/establish empires.
In other words, if any ancient army would have attacked China, they woulda been overwhelmed by the amount of people, cities, and armies scattered everywhere. Lol.
But nowadays they've gone through the industrial revolution and are trying to take a scientific approach, not that they already don't think they are close to, if not the best, in math and science. I am not surprised at all they spent so much into creating breakthroughs and putting a good Chinese show on for the world to see..
