is that really a freestyle???

how many rappers do you think really freestyle? weither its on the radio, on a mixtape, or whatever. I mean because youll hear the same eminem, cannibus, chino xL,evidence,etc,etc,etc... freestyles on 2 or 3 different tapes. WTF..

or does it come down to what your personal opinion of what a freestyle is?

^^^^^^your right for the most part

A lot of those Artists have freestyles that are the same but
just different beats

Written ~ Verse from paper

Freestyle ~ Verse from your head

And when it comes down to it...You have to be a 50 / 50 rapper
to be the complete package

Half of U should be able to freestyle
While the other Half should be able to write good songs

When it comes down to this Half & Half...Some rappers are 50 / 30
or even 40 / 20

You feel me

Some people like my cousin can freestyle for 5 minutes
without one pause but he rarely has anything written down

Me...I can write words till my hand cramps

But I can't freestyle for shit...Maybe for a few seconds

So when it comes down to it...It all depends on the rapper &
how fine he feels doing on or the other

But you should practice both because you never know

Who's / Who

You don't want to be a poetic writer battling a freestyler

Or

A freestyler battling a poetic writer

You just won't know if he's really coming from the dome or not

I used to get excited to find a "Canibus Freestyle" on the internet. Then I listened to more of his portfolio, and found that most of this shit was rehash. You can argue that those lines are theirs, and they think of them as they are a part of the artist's identity... but, cmon. I think you'll find Sage does honest freestyles. He can sound whack as fuck in them. Get his freestyle session with Apathy. When there's fuckups and stupid trains of thought, you KNOW it's a freestyle. A freestyle should really just be about fun... A beat and an artist coming off the dome with no writtens is what I consider.

I would like some heads to identify some good ones though, it's a type of exhibit I really enjoy.

I know for a fact that JayZ does, or has, freestyled songs for albums. For example, if u really listen 2 him, he leaves one point to go to another point real quick. Thats how I do. I used to go to tha studio, freestyle about 10 takes, sit down pick out 16 of tha hottest lines, put it together, and dish out tha song. I mean, its a different form of freestyling a song, but I will freestyle it.

Some artist that do freestyle are:

Biggie
JayZ
Nas(Hott)
DMX(Tha Best 4 Past 3 years)
Jin
Poster Boy
Fabolous
Jadakiss
Beans

D-Dizzle 03-18-03 11:21 AM

Man I was thinking about this shit the other day. Those so called "Freestyles", that be on mixtapes and on Rap city and shit be prewitten. Thats for the poeple that belive a freestyle is a never heard before verse about no certain subject just talking about anything , from line to line. Then you got the off the dome frees where thats what it is... of the top. You can tell if somebody spittin' a written after they spit long enough. But for the most part all of ;em do it. I heard Eminem spit writtens (all those Wake Up Show Freestyles are written), Chino XL, Canibus, Ras Kass, all these cats thats lyrical all spit writtens because they don't wanna look like a ass on radio or t.v. Cuz when you freein' off the dome you gonna get caught after awhile sayin some dumb shit.

Lee Scott 03-18-03 01:09 PM

juice and supernat - dopest freestyle emcees

Killah Koz 03-18-03 05:03 PM

freestyle can mean 2 things

dropping off the dome

or

spitting a written verse to an already used beat

that probly explains it

Yes, Jay doesnt write. He hasn't writen a lyric since his first album (so he says).

And Jin didn't freestyle. He came on stage with 2-4 bars written and then free'd the rest.
