Question for the seasoned...

I've been following rap forever...

Not religiously.

But on and off, I'm very finicky about who I listen to.

I'm a rattle off my biggest rap influences...
Basically the only shit I've really listened to alot...

I want the real niggas, the really gifted up in here...
To drop their opinion on the talent of my influences..
And to drop the names of some really talented MC's who's CDs I should be checkin out.

So far...

Ice T (the first rapper I ever heard and my most respected of the gangsta genre)

NWA (back in the day, they were the shit)

Eazy E (caught his debut "Eazy Duz It" and was knocked over, the song, Boyz in the Hood, well, shit, I loved that whole album!)

Public Enemy (honestly, only heard a few songs here and there, but what I heard was pretty amazing)

DMX (found him in 1999, and thought "What's my Name", "Up in Here", etc was bad-ass...this guy resurrected rap for me)

Eminem (hasn't everyone been influenced at least a little by him)

Drop your opinions on these cats and direct me to some more talent, please.

Right on, New Jack Hustler was the first Ice-T song I ever heard, NWA pioneered a whole new niche of hip hop that has been built on till today. Eazy had his moments, but I never really felt him solo. DMX has put out some good music. Ice Cube was the first album I ever owned in sixth grade, so I gotta give him props. KRS threw lyrics that made people think, and that still stands today.

**looks at his white skin and sighs** dumbass..

Ice T, NWA and Eazy E

^^yeah this is a good base for gangsta rap. but gangsta rap is dead.

Public Enemy

^^old school, nice but lyrically weak by todays standards.

DMX

^^he's a very angry....and wack rapper with a good producer backing him up.

Eminem

^^yeah hes ill but hes also pretty much said everything he can say.

go listen to:

mos def- black on both sides
wu tang clan- any album except "the w"
busta rhymes- when disaster strikes
redman- any album
xzibit- any album
blak twang- any album
roots manuva- any album

pzz.

Ice T, NWA and Eazy E

Nice emcees back in the day, created a whole new era for rap, but not necessarily for hiphop, i feel they took the true essence away from it with 'Gangsta' rap

Public Enemy

^Dope. Fight the power was the shit, a very good choice, not the best by todays standards i agree, but these guys were pioneers.

DMX

I admit to not being a big DMX fan, i dont like the whole 'Thug' concept, sorry. .

Eminem

Very talented lyricist, not scared to bring out his real feelings and express them poetically, very good choice my man.

You Should Listen Too:

Run DMC - Pioneers along with Public Enemy, chances are if you like P.E you'll like these guys too.
Tribe Called Quest - always the positive feel to them, gave me a different take on life witht heir music.

Aesop Rock: This kid is phenominal with his imagery and concepts, he's more for the backpacker era but i think you should at least give him a listen.

Dude...

Johnny 6 Feet...

I appreciate your feedback on my question...

But you gotta be a young motherfucker to not realize that the word, "nigga", when used how I used it...

Means the hardcore, the dedicated, the ones who love this rap game...

It has nothin to do with skin color...

By reacting like ya did...

Ya just let me know you ain't one of em'.

But again, thanks for your opinion anyway.

Everyone else...thanks much, people.

MuhThugga 05-30-03 06:17 PM

listen to

dead prez
Aesop Rock
DJ Shadow
El-P
Sole
Alias
Dose One
Chino XL
Dos Noun
Eyedea
The Coup

Just to name a few

plus, DMX is wack. Eminem seems to be in the motion of taking a long walk off a short pier.

Aiight then "MY Nigga" go down to wherever all the black poeple live in your town and say that shit and tell me if they gonna be impressed by your "connection to the real niggas"....The Fuck is you thinkin'!? Only excuse you may have is that if you grew up with a core of black cats and they 'LET' you say that word, but the random black person is gonna wanna beat yo ass.
and I'm black and thats coming from a "real" nigga.....
Seem to me you listen to the KRS and Cube c.d's TOO much..or not enough...dumb ass

Born To Kill 06-05-03 02:05 PM

Oh my goodness...

FUCK OFF!

How was that, nigga?

I say what I fuckin want when I fuckin want to.

I'm 33 years old.

Ain't no one corrected me in person yet.

Only over the internet...

Where EVERYONE'S got big balls...

But if ya were here, in my presence...

You wouldn't say shit either.

Otherwise, someone would have shut me up by now.

But that ain't happened.

2pac - any album, he has made me realy appreciate rap.
Biggie - any album, his wordplay and ryhming is heavy. One of the best ever.
LL - hes a legend, hes always been in with the times.
Eminem - one of the best lyricists around, not a bad actor either.
DMX - since his 1st album ive liked him, hes real.
Gangstarr - Legends, the best duo ever, also like them coz there real.
The first song I ever heard was Rappers Delight, not when it came out coz im only 18 but i can still listen 2 it now, this song made me follow hip hop.

Lab Rat 06-05-03 08:23 PM

well eminem got me into rap. 5 years ago, heard him. then got his pay-per-view concert and discovered dre. that lead to snoop. then i heard DMX's who we be on MTV and decided to get some more rap. i still probably listen to alotta mainstream shit, but i have an NWA cd so its all good :p oh yeah i grew me a DMX beard a while ago (now i just gotta go bald, dont think ill do that)

kgm 06-05-03 08:54 PM

Check out the list that MuhThugga tossed up, all quality. Also check out Slug, Sage Francis, Mr. Lif, Kweli, and Musab.

varentao 06-05-03 09:00 PM

Er, *puts on pedant cap* - MuhThugga - DJ Shadow is a producer...not an emcee..

there's a lot. But here goes

Rakim and Eric B (actually that should be Eric B and Rakim..) (especially 'Follow the Leader' which was produced by Eric B..i know, i know, but i thought i'd throw an oldie in looking at what he's heard..)..

Sage Francis (lyrically brilliant...with great delivery to complement...some of the beats he does his stuff to aint bad either...Makeshift Patriot being absolutely fucking brilliant...)..

Aesop Rock (Uses imagery and concepts so damn well, that maybe sometiems over does it. But then again, that's who he is. Another brilliant artist. And the man still has a part-time job allegedly doing some manual labour..)...

Roots Manuva (diverse, wide ranging, fuses many differnet music forms into hip-hop...delivery is weird yet original and very good...and lyrics deep, cryptic yet full of so much...beats/tunes are brilliant...)..

Dead Prez (..i can't be bothered to go on, so i'll just list some others, then i'm off...but yeah, kind of thought provoking pro-black sometimes extreme...but yeah, they bring up some real good points, and producing usually quite good too...)...

Wu-Tang Clan
Ras Kass (you just gotta..)..
Afu-Ra
(too many, and i got to go...i'm sure other people will drop the names of those who i didn;'t mention...but seroiusly, ROOTS MANUVA, Roots Manuva, check out his stuff...don't just check out a couple of tracks though...go through about 8-10, and don't try anf get right into it..just let it all flow...)...

Kapone 06-05-03 09:01 PM
