Dumbshit of the day 10-2
Man seeks refuge in
car trunk Police still looking for suspect of attempted gas station holdup By charles w. kim Staff Writer SOUTH BRUNSWICK — You can’t escape the long arm of the law, not even in your car’s trunk. According to police, a bizarre chain of events Monday night led a robbery suspect to leave his own money and a Hazlet man to lock himself in his car’s trunk. The incident began at 11 p.m. Monday night when the gas station attendant at the BP Amoco on Route 1 called 911 to report an attempted robbery. The attendant told police that a man had asked for a pack of cigarettes and gave him $20. The attendant opened the register and the suspect attempted to grab the money. The suspect, described as a black male, 15 to 19 years old, 5 feet 9 inches, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, then fled across the highway without taking anything. In addition, the suspect left the $20 he originally gave the attendant. In the meantime, police said that Patrolman Mike Pellino was in the area and observed a vehicle leave the gas station around the same time as the call came in. Pellino stopped the vehicle at Route 1 north and Blackhorse Lane. The driver of the car, Nicholas Visco, 27, of Hazlet, got out of the driver’s seat and proceeded into the trunk by way of the backseat, according to police. Once inside the trunk Visco pulled the backseat over himself, concealing his whereabouts. Officers then ordered a second occupant of the vehicle, identified as Jamie Levine, 20, of Keyport, out of the car. According to police, Levine told officers that Visco was wanted by authorities and was hiding in the trunk. Officers then cautiously approached the vehicle using ballistic shields and deployed cap stun into the vehicle. Police said Visco jumped out of the trunk and was restrained by several officers. Police learned that Visco was wanted by the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department for a child support violation and by South Plainfield police for failure to appear in court. Visco was charged with disorderly conduct, hindering apprehension and resisting arrest. He was lodged on $10,000 bail at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick. Police are still seeking the would-be robber. |
